1. Alcatraz interesting facts: Isla de Alcatraces

How to Get Tickets to Alcatraz

The first of our 11 interesting facts about Alcatraz – the island was initially named Isla de Alcatraces, which translates to, Island of the Pelicans.

The thing is, there are rarely any pelicans on Alcatraz, and the name was meant for Yerba Buena Island. There was a miscommunication because reading a map is tricky, you know?

2. Native Ohlone Native Americans didn’t nickname Alcatraz island

Facts about Alcatraz, White seagulls on the rock,
White seagulls cover Alcatraz Island.

Native Ohlone Native Americans didn’t make an official name for the island. They only ever called it “The White Rock,” because so many seabirds roosted on the island leaving behind a white look to the sandstone island.

3. Alcatraz prison operated for less than 30 years

A cell at Alcatraz prison, facts about the rock
A prison cell, during the infamous prisons 30 years of operations.

Is Alcatraz still used? The island is currently no longer a prison, but instead a national landmark for tourists to visit.

Another one of our Alcatraz island facts is that the infamous Alcatraz prison operated for less than 30 years, from 1934 – 1963. Why did Alcatraz close? The prison closed because the government found that it was too expensive to keep running.

4. Facts about Alcatraz: Alcatraz and the Civil War

Facts about Alcatraz, history of Alcatraz prison and the island
The famous prison was once a military outpost, older than the Civil War.

Most of the island’s history was as a military outpost that predates the Civil War. Construction for the Fortress Alcatraz Citadel began in 1853, eight years before war broke out.

5. Alcatraz Fun Facts: the first lighthouse

Facts about the history of Alcatraz, the island was home to the first lighthouse
Before the infamous prison, the island was home to the West Coast’s first lighthouse.

A part of the Alcatraz construction in 1854 was the building of its famous lighthouse. Alcatraz Island was home to the first lighthouse on the West Coast.

See Alcatraz, San Francisco, and Muir Woods all in one incredible day on Dylan’s Famous Alcatraz Day Tour.  Explore the city’s top landmarks, walk among the towering Coastal Redwoods, have lunch in the charming waterfront town of Sausalito, and enjoy the Official Alcatraz Tour all in one day!

6. Alcatraz prison facts: the island became a military prison

The history of Alcatraz, the island housed prisoners in the civil war
Some of the first prisoners at Alcatraz Prison.

Fort Alcatraz’s nearly escape-proof island made it a fitting location for jailing everyone from military officials to Native Americans, and eventually become an official military prison in 1861. As the Civil War raged, Alcatraz was used to jail citizens suspected of being Confederate sympathizers.

7. Alcatraz famous inmates: The Birdman

Alcatraz famous prisoner, The Birdman's old cell room
The Birdman’s secluded cell room at Alcatraz prison.

Why is Alcatraz famous? One reason why the prison gained famed is because it housed so many famous criminals. Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly, and of course Alcatraz prisoner 105 – John Kendrick, are among some of the notorious prisoners that were kept on the island.

One of the famous prisoners of Alcatraz, The Birdman, never actually kept birds on Alcatraz Island. The Birdman became famous while keeping birds at Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary.

Unfortunately for him, Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary had a strict no-pets-allowed policy. The Birdman was held away from the general population and was kept in seclusion in the hospital wing.

8. Alcatraz famous prisoner: Al Capone

Alcatraz history, Al Capone's transfer
The authorities were nervous that Al Capone would escape while being transferred to the Island, so they transported his three-car train car via barge.

Arguably the most famous inmate to serve time on The Rock was Al Capone. There was a realistic fear that Capone would bribe his way to an escape route during the transfer from his train to his boat to Alcatraz.

So, they never had Al Capone get off the train. Al Capone arrived at Alcatraz Island by placing his three-car train onto a barge, bringing the entire train to Alcatraz.

9. University students saved the island from private real estate developers

Alcatraz 1970, Native American's saved Alcatraz Island
Children playing at the beach during the occupation of Alcatraz 1970.

If it hadn’t been for a 19-month long occupation from Native American students at San Francisco State, Alcatraz Island would have fallen into the hands of private real estate developers.

Even though the Native American Occupation was an effort to build a university and cultural center, the occupiers succeeded in preserving Alcatraz Island for future generations.

10. Alcatraz facts: kids grew up on Alcatraz Island

History of Alcatraz, children lived on the island
Children of the guards lived and grew up on Alcatraz Island.

Some kids grew up on Alcatraz. Where else would the guards and their families live? Jolene Babyak, whose father was a correctional officer, grew up on Alcatraz Island and chronicled life on the prison island in her book, Eyewitness on Alcatraz, Life on The Rock as told by Guards, Families, and Prisoners.

You just might run into Jolene in the Alcatraz gift shop signing copies of her books and answering your most burning questions about growing up in the shadow of the world’s most infamous prison.

11. The last remaining guard tower on Alcatraz is a movie prop

Alcatraz San Francisco, the Rock
Movie prop on Alcatraz Island.

The last remaining guard tower on Alcatraz is a movie prop built for scenes on the famous Sean Connery and Nick Cage blockbuster The Rock.

Do these surprising 11 facts have you wanting to explore Alcatraz for yourself? Do you have questions about the island – are you wondering, “was Alcatraz haunted,” or “what life was like on the island?” The best way to learn is through experience, so come and enjoy an Alcatraz tour for yourself.

Great Tour, incorrect starting point information from Viator. The Tour and Tour conductor, Aaron, were great. The information that was given for a meeting point for this Tour starting point by Viator was incorrect on several event reminders. A call to Dillon Tours, the local operator, clarified the location for starting the tour.

This full day tour took... This full day tour took us all around SF to Muir Woods and Saulsalito. Trevor, a lifelong resident of SF, shared good knowledge about the history of the city with some fun personal experiences. He engaged all of the passengers in conversation and was truly interested in providing us the best experience possible. The time spent at each location was enough for me and he planned the route to save the best for last!

Well organised, friendly, good value double up tour. We had a great day that was guided by Laura. She was very personable and pointed out so many places of interest. She added in lots of anecdotes. We were in a small open air van and we really enjoyed that aspect of the tour. Hop on hop off tours are too onerous for me as I have some mobility issues. We did stop and get out at the Golden Gate Bridge and the Palace of fine arts. Lovely short stops! The pick up arrangements were clear and we were let out at the ferry landing for the Alcatraz ferry. Not everyone did that part of the tour but we were glad we did. Once at Alcatraz you get an audio set and it’s great. An added bonus for me was that a little trolley was available for anyone with mobility issues to take me up to the top to start the cell tour. It’s a steep climb.

Exactly what we wanted! An amazing trip! Exactly what we wanted and Patrick our tour guide was amazing. It’s a short city tour about an hour long, photo stop at Golden Gate Bridge and then onto Muir woods. Beautiful place and 90 minutes was just enough time to do just over an hour of walking (we went to bridge three and back) and then spent some time in the gift shop and cafe. There’s an option to get off in Sausalito on the way back if you want to explore more but we stayed on the shuttle and were taken back to our starting point. Patrick provided lots of great facts, jokes and music along the way. Would highly recommend Dylan’s Tours!

Excellent way to see San Francisco I believe the tour guide I had for this tour was named Waymond - he was an excellent guide. I especially loved his knowledge of music and local musicians, and that he played songs in each neighbourhood from artists that either lived there or wrote music locally. I loved that it was a small group of only 5 of us too. 100% would recommend this tour to anybody visiting SF!

A bit of an odd structure to this tour, because it was summer we did the Alcatraz tour first, if you are interested in the prison you’ll enjoy the tour. So, you get sent a QR code which is your ticket to the island, and it is all self guided, so the tour was for 9.20, and then the next part of the tour starts at 2pm which is the city and muir woods trip. So you have to entertain yourself until 2pm basically, the trip to muir woods was nice, Jules was an enjoyable driver providing us with lots of interesting facts about the area. We stopped at the museum of fine are for a photo and then on the north side of the golden gate bridge for a photo, then to muir woods park for a walk around for 1.5 hours, and then another drive around the city before being dropped off. So there isn’t really a guided tour besides maybe the drive through the city, really what you are paying for is the transportation to these places and then you need to pay $15 to enter the park. Good trip, bit overpriced.

What an incredible experience! Dylan was our host for the day. The tour and conversation was great! Patrick and Dylan got my husband and I a reservation at the Barrel house on Valentine’s Day in Sausalito. Even after we ran 15 mins behind at Muir Woods ( no fault to our tour guide ) the restaurant was still holding our table because they “ they just knew we were coming” Thank you Dylan and Patrick for such a great day! The post is inaccurate the host informed me over the phone that the tour is actually 4 hours and that they spend about 15 minutes at each of the locations aside from Muir Woods where you will spend an hour. I was told over the phone that I could cancel because the listing is inaccurate but they stopped replying after. You’re better off going to these locations on your own which is what I did. save your money.

the trip to Muir woods was magical and our guide Jeffrey was fun and knowledgeable. I could have used another hour in the woods just to longer and savor the environment but didn't feel rushed - just left wanting more. I loved the photo stops along the way - easiet way to get a great bridge photo! lunch in Sausalito was fun too. great recommendations and good food.

Great deal and value, our guide was knowledgeable of the city and always willing to take photos. Also he was very accommodating to drop us off at the location close to where we were going after the tour, as long as he was passing it. The only thing that was annoying was waiting for people who were late. It tells you to arrive 20-15 mins before the tour but we still had to wait for 2 people and then wait for people again on each stop, not the driver’s fault, just need to be more strict with time cus it’s not fair for many of us.

We took the tour today that included Muir Woods. Our tour guide, Joe M.,was phenomenal! He had lots of knowledge and tips for our stay. He was very comical, too! Plenty of time to enjoy each stop. We're so glad we took this tour!

Has a great time touring San Francisco, the Muir Woods, and Alcatraz. Our tour guide, Sully, was very informative, funny, and helpful. He made the trip very enjoyable! I highly recommended Dylan’s Tours! Would definitely use them again and try one of the other tours available when we come back!!

Did a tour this weekend that went to Muir Woods, Alcatraz, stopped in Sausalito, and a couple other spots. Was very smooth from pick up to drop off. We landed in the city very early am and debated cancelling the tour but were glad we didn’t. Patrick kept the ride lively as well. Would recommend to anyone traveling to San Francisco.

I went on a tour with Sully and cannot recommend it enough. Sully was extremely knowledgeable and funny. He had so much to tell us about San Francisco. We went to so many places and I feel like the tour covered just enough. The bus was clean and we were offered water and a snack upon the start of the tour. Muir Woods was my favorite part of the trip. I think anyone visiting should book one of the bus tours! You won’t regret it!
