What to Expect When Visiting Sonoma Plaza?

Sebastiani Building in Sonoma

Start your afternoon with a relaxed stroll through historic Sonoma Plaza, where tree-lined pathways lead you past historic buildings and beautifully landscaped gardens. At the center, the stone-faced City Hall stands as a proud relic of the town’s past, while the Mission San Francisco Solano—a short walk away—offers a glimpse into Sonoma’s early days as the northernmost mission in California.

As you wander, the plaza invites discovery at every turn. Boutique shops offer everything from handcrafted jewelry to locally made olive oils and wines. Stop by Sonoma Market for artisan goodies to take home or swing by The Cheese Factory, a long-time local favorite for its exceptional dairy delights.

For art lovers, the plaza is equally rewarding. Local galleries feature works by regional artists, and you might even stumble across a live painting session or a pop-up art walk. If you’re lucky, your visit to explore Sonoma may coincide with a cultural festival or live performance in the square—adding an extra layer of vibrancy to your afternoon.

What Food and Wine Experiences Can I Enjoy in Sonoma?

Sonoma Plaza is the perfect place to pause, recharge, and explore during your wine country journey. This lunch break is all about making the most of the plaza’s exceptional food and wine offerings — and trust us, there are so many great restaurants and bars to discover!

For a laid-back meal that embodies Sonoma’s farm-to-table ethos, The Girl & The Fig is a local favorite. Their rustic French-inspired dishes, like duck confit or a perfectly paired charcuterie board, are an ideal complement to the day’s wine tastings. Craving something a bit lighter? Oso Sonoma offers inventive small plates and a raw bar that’s perfect for sharing, while Tasca Tasca brings a taste of Portugal with its cozy tapas menu.

If you’re looking for an elevated dining experience, El Dorado Kitchen serves up California-Mediterranean dishes in a chic setting. Seasonal options like fresh seafood or roasted lamb highlight the best of local ingredients, perfect for those wanting to linger over a memorable lunch.

If there’s still room for more wine, the Sonoma Valley Wine Shop is right in the plaza and features a wide array of local wines to taste and take home. Or, for a quick detour with a historic twist, Buena Vista Winery offers tranquil tastings for only $10 – an epic Sonoma wine deal. Pangloss Cellars, set in a beautifully restored historic building, specializes in bold reds and elegant whites with a sophisticated tasting menu.

Your time in Sonoma Plaza is your chance to relax and enjoy the flavors of the region before heading off to your next vineyard. Whether you choose to sip, savor, or simply soak in the plaza’s charm, this midday break located right in the heart of wine country is sure to be one of the highlights of your Ultimate Napa and Sonoma Wine Tour.

What Historical Landmarks Should I Visit in Sonoma?

Sonoma Wine Country Tour

Sonoma County, rich in history and culture, offers a variety of historical landmarks that are well worth a visit. Here are some must-see sites:

Sonoma Plaza

This is the heart of Sonoma and one of California’s most historic town squares. The plaza is surrounded by charming shops, restaurants, and wine tasting rooms.

Mission San Francisco Solano

Group touring Spanish colonial mission with terra cotta roof and cross in California wine country on sunny spring day.

Founded in 1823, this mission is the last of the 21 California missions. It’s an excellent place to learn about the mission era and the role of Franciscan missionaries in the region. The site features a museum and beautiful gardens.

Lachryma Montis

This historic home was once the residence of General Mariano Vallejo, a prominent figure in California’s early statehood. The property includes the original adobe home and offers insights into Vallejo’s life and the history of the area.

The Sonoma State Historic Park

You’ll find several of the historic buildings listed in this guide in the Sonoma State Historic Park, including the Sonoma Mission and the Sonoma Barracks. It provides a glimpse into the early days of California, with well-preserved structures and informative exhibits.

Jack London State Historic Park

A short drive from Sonoma Plaza, this park preserves the ruins of the famous author Jack London’s home and the surrounding land he cherished. Visitors can explore the remnants of his dream estate, learn about his life and literary contributions, and hike the scenic trails.

The Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park

Also a short drive from Sonoma Plaza, this site features the adobe home of General Vallejo and showcases the area’s ranching history. Visitors can take guided tours to learn about life in the 19th century.

The Old Sonoma Courthouse

Located in the heart of Sonoma, this beautiful courthouse dates back to the 1900s and is an excellent example of Romanesque architecture. It is still in use today and offers a glimpse into the region’s judicial history.

Relax in Sonoma Park

Women enjoying picnic beneath blooming cherry trees in California wine country park with white blossoms in full bloom.

After a morning of tastings and exploration, Sonoma Plaza’s park is the perfect spot to unwind. Many of our guests say their favorite moments happen here: sharing a bottle of wine under the shade of the oak trees with a picnic spread from local spots.

The park’s inviting lawns and historic surroundings make it easy to settle in, whether you’re savoring fresh cheeses and charcuterie with a bottle of Pinot Noir or simply enjoying the ambiance. If you prefer to stretch your legs, a short stroll reveals more of the plaza’s charm, from hidden gardens to striking views of the surrounding hills.

This mid-day pause is a highlight of your tour—a chance to take in the essence of Sonoma before continuing to your next vineyard.

Great Tour, incorrect starting point information from Viator. The Tour and Tour conductor, Aaron, were great. The information that was given for a meeting point for this Tour starting point by Viator was incorrect on several event reminders. A call to Dillon Tours, the local operator, clarified the location for starting the tour.

This full day tour took... This full day tour took us all around SF to Muir Woods and Saulsalito. Trevor, a lifelong resident of SF, shared good knowledge about the history of the city with some fun personal experiences. He engaged all of the passengers in conversation and was truly interested in providing us the best experience possible. The time spent at each location was enough for me and he planned the route to save the best for last!

Well organised, friendly, good value double up tour. We had a great day that was guided by Laura. She was very personable and pointed out so many places of interest. She added in lots of anecdotes. We were in a small open air van and we really enjoyed that aspect of the tour. Hop on hop off tours are too onerous for me as I have some mobility issues. We did stop and get out at the Golden Gate Bridge and the Palace of fine arts. Lovely short stops! The pick up arrangements were clear and we were let out at the ferry landing for the Alcatraz ferry. Not everyone did that part of the tour but we were glad we did. Once at Alcatraz you get an audio set and it’s great. An added bonus for me was that a little trolley was available for anyone with mobility issues to take me up to the top to start the cell tour. It’s a steep climb.

Exactly what we wanted! An amazing trip! Exactly what we wanted and Patrick our tour guide was amazing. It’s a short city tour about an hour long, photo stop at Golden Gate Bridge and then onto Muir woods. Beautiful place and 90 minutes was just enough time to do just over an hour of walking (we went to bridge three and back) and then spent some time in the gift shop and cafe. There’s an option to get off in Sausalito on the way back if you want to explore more but we stayed on the shuttle and were taken back to our starting point. Patrick provided lots of great facts, jokes and music along the way. Would highly recommend Dylan’s Tours!

Excellent way to see San Francisco I believe the tour guide I had for this tour was named Waymond - he was an excellent guide. I especially loved his knowledge of music and local musicians, and that he played songs in each neighbourhood from artists that either lived there or wrote music locally. I loved that it was a small group of only 5 of us too. 100% would recommend this tour to anybody visiting SF!

Muir Tour So much to see, you learn so much, our driver was amazing! He had a song list for all of the places he took us by, which was so fun! We had a little fun sing along for a minute. He was a wealth of knowledge and felt safe the entire time!

Worth every penny Our tour guide Per was great. Very funny and knowledgeable. We really enjoyed the city tour but the tour of Sausalito was basically a drive by.

We had a very enjoyable and interesting day. Our guide, Per, was both knowledgeable and helpful, giving us lots of useful information about where to eat, shop etc. He also shared his extensive local knowledge with us and this was very interesting. Highly enjoyable day - would recommend without hesitation.

A bit of an odd structure to this tour, because it was summer we did the Alcatraz tour first, if you are interested in the prison you’ll enjoy the tour. So, you get sent a QR code which is your ticket to the island, and it is all self guided, so the tour was for 9.20, and then the next part of the tour starts at 2pm which is the city and muir woods trip. So you have to entertain yourself until 2pm basically, the trip to muir woods was nice, Jules was an enjoyable driver providing us with lots of interesting facts about the area. We stopped at the museum of fine are for a photo and then on the north side of the golden gate bridge for a photo, then to muir woods park for a walk around for 1.5 hours, and then another drive around the city before being dropped off. So there isn’t really a guided tour besides maybe the drive through the city, really what you are paying for is the transportation to these places and then you need to pay $15 to enter the park. Good trip, bit overpriced.

It was a good tour but a few things to consider. South saulito we thought were were going to be able to get out and tour around the area so that is not what we got. If we knew it was just driving thru for the price we paid it was not worth the money. We should have paid for Muir Woods and Alcatraz only but guide does not stay with u in Alcatraz. So the money you pay really is just to drive to Muir Woods. So that was disappointed . Will I pay again for this I would say no

What an incredible experience! Dylan was our host for the day. The tour and conversation was great! Patrick and Dylan got my husband and I a reservation at the Barrel house on Valentine’s Day in Sausalito. Even after we ran 15 mins behind at Muir Woods ( no fault to our tour guide ) the restaurant was still holding our table because they “ they just knew we were coming” Thank you Dylan and Patrick for such a great day! You are our two favorite people in San Francisco!

The post is inaccurate the host informed me over the phone that the tour is actually 4 hours and that they spend about 15 minutes at each of the locations aside from Muir Woods where you will spend an hour. I was told over the phone that I could cancel because the listing is inaccurate but they stopped replying after. You’re better off going to these locations on your own which is what I did. save your money.

the trip to Muir woods was magical and our guide Jeffrey was fun and knowledgeable. I could have used another hour in the woods just to longer and savor the environment but didn't feel rushed - just left wanting more. I loved the photo stops along the way - easiet way to get a great bridge photo! lunch in Sausalito was fun too. great recommendations and good food.

Great deal and value, our guide was knowledgeable of the city and always willing to take photos. Also he was very accommodating to drop us off at the location close to where we were going after the tour, as long as he was passing it. The only thing that was annoying was waiting for people who were late. It tells you to arrive 20-15 mins before the tour but we still had to wait for 2 people and then wait for people again on each stop, not the driver’s fault, just need to be more strict with time cus it’s not fair for many of us.

Did a tour this weekend that went to Muir Woods, Alcatraz, stopped in Sausalito, and a couple other spots. Was very smooth from pick up to drop off. We landed in the city very early am and debated cancelling the tour but were glad we didn’t. Patrick kept the ride lively as well. Would recommend to anyone traveling to San Francisco.

I went on a tour with Sully and cannot recommend it enough. Sully was extremely knowledgeable and funny. He had so much to tell us about San Francisco. We went to so many places and I feel like the tour covered just enough. The bus was clean and we were offered water and a snack upon the start of the tour. Muir Woods was my favorite part of the trip. I think anyone visiting should book one of the bus tours! You won’t regret it!
