The 2026 FIFA World Cup is coming to the San Francisco Bay Area, with six matches at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. The Bay Area Host Committee has worked with FIFA to ensure the region showcases its best during the tournament.

If you’re planning your trip, here’s what you need to know: stay in San Francisco instead of Santa Clara, and use the time between matches to experience one of the most spectacular destinations in America.

The Golden Gate Bridge, Muir Woods’ ancient redwoods, and Napa Valley wine country all sit within an hour of the city. Between World Cup matches, you’ll have 24 to 72 hours. That’s enough time to see why San Francisco is worth the trip beyond the stadium.

Who This Guide Is For

This guide is for World Cup 2026 visitors who have 2-5 days in the Bay Area and want to maximize time between matches.

What You’ll Learn

  • Where to actually stay (and why San Francisco beats Santa Clara)
  • How to get between the city and matches at Levi’s Stadium
  • What you can realistically see in 24, 48, or 72 hours between games
  • Which experiences are worth your limited time

Where to Stay During the FIFA World Cup 2026 in the San Francisco Bay Area

Among all World Cup host cities in 2026, San Francisco offers one of the most compelling destinations beyond the matches themselves.

Should You Stay Near the Stadium in Santa Clara or in San Francisco for the FIFA World Cup 26™?

San Francisco wins for almost every visitor.

Santa Clara is a suburban Silicon Valley tech hub located between San Francisco and San Jose, with office parks and chain hotels. While it’s home to Levi’s Stadium and the San Francisco 49ers, it offers little for visitors to experience between matches.

San Francisco gives you the Golden Gate Bridge, world-class restaurants, walkable neighborhoods, and things to do between matches.

From downtown San Francisco to Levi’s Stadium takes about 45 minutes by car with no traffic (plan for 75+ minutes during peak times). Caltrain takes roughly 90-100 minutes with transfers.

From a Santa Clara hotel to the stadium takes 10-30 minutes, depending on traffic and where you’re staying. You save 30-60 minutes each way by staying in Santa Clara, but you trade days of exploration for it.

The exception: If you’re attending multiple matches within 24 hours, staying in

The Best San Francisco Neighborhoods for 2026 World Cup Visitors

Not all San Francisco neighborhoods work equally well for World Cup visitors. You want easy Caltrain access, walkability, and proximity to attractions.

Union Square and Downtown San Francisco

These areas give you the most central location. You’re walking distance to the Ferry Building, cable cars, and Chinatown. Caltrain’s downtown station is a 15-minute walk or quick rideshare. Hotels here run $250-$500+ per night during World Cup 2026, but you’re in the middle of everything.

Fisherman’s Wharf

This works if you prioritize tourist landmarks over local neighborhoods. You’re steps from Pier 39, Alcatraz ferries, and waterfront restaurants. The trade-off is you’re farther from Caltrain and a bit more isolated from other San Francisco neighborhoods. Hotels range from $200-$400 per night.

North Beach and the Financial District

This is a great way to split the difference. North Beach gives you authentic Italian espresso shops, family restaurants, and proximity to Coit Tower. The Financial District puts you near the Ferry Building and Embarcadero. Both neighborhoods have solid hotel options at $200-$350 per night and easy access to Caltrain.

Mission District and SoMa

These areas attract younger travelers and FIFA fans looking for nightlife. The Mission has the Bay Area’s best taquerias, murals, and dive bars. SoMa puts you near Oracle Park and the newer tech campus hotels. Both neighborhoods sit close to Caltrain. Hotels run $150-$300 per night.

Plan Your Trip: How To Get from San Francisco to World Cup Games at Levi’s Stadium

You have three options for getting from San Francisco to Levi’s Stadium: Caltrain, rideshare, or driving yourself. Each works differently depending on your hotel location and tolerance for crowds.

Caltrain

Caltrain runs from San Francisco’s 4th and King Station to Santa Clara’s Great America Station, about a mile from Levi’s Stadium. On match days, FIFA will likely run shuttle buses from the station to the stadium entrance, along with fan activation areas and fan experiences around the station.

The trip takes 60-75 minutes on express trains, 90-100 minutes on local trains. Trains run every 30-60 minutes depending on time of day. Expect FIFA to add extra service on match days.

Cost: $7-$10 each way depending on zones. Buy tickets through the Caltrain app.

The catch: You need to get to 4th and King Station first. From Union Square, that’s a 15-minute walk or quick Muni ride. From Fisherman’s Wharf, plan 25-30 minutes by Muni or rideshare.

Rideshare and Taxis

Uber and Lyft work fine for getting to Levi’s Stadium, but expect surge pricing on match days. A ride from downtown San Francisco to the stadium runs $50-$75 normally. During the World Cup, plan for $100-$150 each way.

The advantage is door-to-door service. The disadvantage is you’re stuck in Bay Area traffic, which adds 15-30 minutes to your trip on game days.

Driving

Parking at Levi’s Stadium costs $40-$60 for regular spots, $100+ for premium lots. The drive from San Francisco takes 45 minutes with no traffic, 75+ minutes during peak times or on match days.

What We Recommend

Take Caltrain to matches. It avoids traffic, drops you close to the stadium, and lets you enjoy your time without worrying about driving. Book a hotel near 4th and King Station or in neighborhoods with easy Muni access to the station.

Where to Eat in SF Bay Area During Your World Cup Visit

Across San Francisco, you’ll find both world-class restaurants and some of the best cheap eats in the U.S. Here’s where to go.

North Beach

Tony’s Pizza Napoletana makes the best pizza in San Francisco. The Margherita pizza won the World Pizza Cup. Go for lunch to avoid long waits.

Mama’s on Washington Square serves the city’s best breakfast. Get there before 9 AM or expect a 45-60 minute wait. The French toast is worth it.

Caffe Trieste opened in 1956 and still pulls some of the best espresso in the Bay Area. It’s a 5-minute walk from Washington Square.

Mission District

La Taqueria makes the best Mission-style burrito in San Francisco. Get the carne asada with extra cheese. Expect a line at lunch and dinner.

Tartine Bakery opened the modern San Francisco bakery movement. The morning bun and country bread are both excellent. Go early because they sell out.

Foreign Cinema combines California cuisine with outdoor dining and classic films projected on the wall. Make reservations 2-3 weeks ahead.

Fisherman’s Wharf

Scoma’s serves the best seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf. It’s an old-school San Francisco restaurant with bay views and Dungeness crab.

Boudin Bakery makes the sourdough bread bowls everyone talks about. They’re touristy but genuinely good.

Ferry Building

Hog Island Oyster Company serves oysters from their Tomales Bay farm. Sit at the bar, order a half dozen oysters and a glass of white wine, and watch ferries come and go.

Cowgirl Creamery makes some of California’s best cheese. Try the Red Hawk.

Must-See San Francisco Landmarks (and How Long They Actually Take)

Most visitors have 24-72 hours between World Cup 2026 matches. Staying in San Francisco means you can step outside your hotel and experience one of the most fascinating cities in America.

The Golden Gate Bridge spanning San Francisco Bay on a clear day, with blue water in the foreground and rolling hills in the background.

Golden Gate Bridge

The bridge itself takes 5 minutes to drive across or 30-40 minutes to walk across. Most visitors spend 1-2 hours total: driving to the vista point, taking photos, and exploring the area.

Our Dylan’s Famous Tour includes Golden Gate Bridge stops and handles all the driving and timing. Plus, with over 20 years of experience guiding San Francisco tours, we know all the best photo spots for that iconic Golden Gate Bridge photo op.

Muir Woods National Monument

Plan 2-3 hours minimum to see Muir Woods. The main loop trail takes 45-60 minutes, but you’ll want time for photos and to actually experience the redwood grove. The drive from San Francisco takes 45 minutes each way.

Entry requires advance reservations. Book parking or shuttle permits 2-3 months ahead for June 2026. Or skip the logistics and take our Dylan’s Famous Tour with Muir Woods.

Alcatraz Island viewed from the water, showing the historic prison buildings and lighthouse against a calm San Francisco Bay with hills in the background.

Alcatraz Island

The full Alcatraz experience takes 2.5-3 hours. Ferries run from Pier 33 every 30 minutes. The island tour includes the cellhouse audio tour, which takes 90 minutes, plus time to explore the grounds and exhibits.

Book 2-3 months ahead. Alcatraz tickets sell out in advance, especially for June dates. During World Cup 2026, book the moment tickets open (typically 90 days out).

Fishing boats docked at Fisherman’s Wharf with storefronts, signage, and a historic streetcar visible in the background on a foggy San Francisco day.

Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39

Budget 2-3 hours if you’re eating and exploring. The area gets touristy, but the sea lions at Pier 39 and the sourdough bread bowls at Boudin Bakery are worth it.

Walk from Fisherman’s Wharf to Ghirardelli Square (15 minutes) for chocolate samples and bay views.

Ferry Building Marketplace

Plan 1-2 hours. The Ferry Building works best for breakfast or lunch. You’ll find local cheese, oysters, artisan bread, and some of the Bay Area’s best food vendors.

Go on Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday mornings when the farmers market sets up outside. The market adds another 30-45 minutes to your visit.

Two people sitting on a grassy hill at Alamo Square with the Painted Ladies Victorian houses visible in the background on a sunny day in San Francisco.

Painted Ladies and Alamo Square

This takes 30-45 minutes. The Painted Ladies are stunning Victorian houses you’ve likely seen in photos. The view from Alamo Square Park looks across the houses to downtown San Francisco.

Most visitors spend 20 minutes taking photos, then move on. Add time if you want to walk through the surrounding Alamo Square neighborhood.

Dylan’s Famous Tour with Muir Woods: See San Francisco in One Day

Our most popular tour covers the Golden Gate Bridge, Muir Woods, and Sausalito in one day. You see the city’s biggest landmarks without dealing with parking, navigation, or timing.

The tour runs 6-7 hours. You spend 90 minutes in Muir Woods walking among 1,000-year-old redwoods, cross the Golden Gate Bridge with stops for photos, and finish in Sausalito with waterfront views and lunch options.

Why it works for World Cup visitors: You maximize your limited time. The tour picks you up from your San Francisco hotel (optional add-on), handles all transportation, and gets you back by early evening. You experience three of Northern California’s most iconic destinations in one day.

Open-Air City Tours of San Francisco

We offer two ways to see San Francisco in our open-air vehicles: a shared tour combined with Alcatraz, or a private tour just for your group.

Shared Open-Air City Tour + Alcatraz: This 4-hour combination tour takes you through San Francisco’s best neighborhoods and landmarks, then drops you at the ferry for your self-guided Alcatraz visit. You see North Beach, Russian Hill, Chinatown, Coit Tower, and the Golden Gate Bridge before heading to Alcatraz Island.

Why it works for World Cup visitors: You knock out two major experiences in one booking. The open-air format means better photos than you’d get through bus windows, and the Alcatraz visit is self-paced so you control the timing.

Private Open-Air Tours: Book one of our open-air vans for just your group (up to 7 people). Choose a 1, 2, or 3-hour route, or customize your own. Private tours reach spots big buses can’t access and move at your pace.

Why it works for World Cup visitors: If you’re traveling with family or friends, private tours give you flexibility. One hour hits the highlights if you’re short on time. Three hours lets you explore deeper. You control the stops, the timing, and the route.

Wine Country Tours

If you have a full day between matches, our Ultimate Napa and Sonoma wine tour takes you into California wine country. You visit wineries in both Napa and Sonoma, enjoy wine tastings, and get a 2-hour lunch break at historic Sonoma Plaza.

The tour runs 9 hours (9:00 AM to 6:00 PM) with pickup from Dylan’s Tours Shop in San Francisco. We handle all the driving while you taste wine, explore Sonoma Plaza, and learn about California winemaking from experienced guides. The tour includes a Golden Gate Bridge photo stop and drive through Sausalito on the way back.

Why it works for World Cup visitors: This is what international visitors come to California for. The wine, the food, the scenery of Napa and Sonoma. You’re already traveling to the Bay Area for the FIFA World Cup 2026. Add one day in wine country and you turn a sports trip into a California experience people save years to have.

The flexible 2-hour lunch break at Sonoma Plaza gives you options for Michelin-starred restaurants, casual picnics, or even an additional wine tasting at one of 30+ tasting rooms.

Weather and What to Pack for Your FIFA World Cup 26™ SF Bay Area Trip

San Francisco weather in June runs 55-65°F. It’s cooler than you expect and much colder than the rest of California.

What the Weather Actually Feels Like

Mornings start around 55°F with fog. By afternoon, it warms to 65°F near downtown and the Mission. The western neighborhoods near Ocean Beach and Golden Gate Park stay cooler and foggier all day.

Santa Clara and Levi’s Stadium run 10-15 degrees warmer than San Francisco. Expect 70-80°F at the stadium with full sun.

What to Pack

Layers are essential. Bring:

  • Light jacket for mornings and evenings
  • Long pants and long sleeves for most days
  • One warm outfit for fog days
  • Shorts and t-shirt for stadium days
  • Comfortable walking shoes (you’ll walk 5-10 miles per day)

San Francisco locals wear jackets in June. Pack yours.

The Fog

June is peak fog season in San Francisco. The fog rolls in most afternoons through the Golden Gate and covers the western half of the city. It burns off by midday, then returns around 4-5 PM.

The fog is part of the San Francisco experience. It creates dramatic photos at the Golden Gate Bridge and keeps the city cooler than the rest of the Bay Area. Just pack accordingly.
