Couple sharing clam chowder bread bowl at Fisherman's Wharf

For the best clam chowder in San Francisco, start with Boudin Bakery at Fisherman’s Wharf for the classic sourdough bread bowl, Chowders at Pier 39 if you want white or red on the same menu, and Sotto Mare in North Beach for the version locals order. All three sit a short walk from where Dylan’s Tours meets its guests.

San Francisco takes a New England soup, creamy and thick and full of clams and potato, and pours it into a hollowed-out loaf of fresh-baked sourdough. That sourdough is the whole reason to order it here, tangy and chewy and still warm from a Wharf bakery. It helps that you’re eating a block from the water, where the fishing boats have been bringing in fresh Pacific clams since long before the tourists showed up.

The Wharf has a chowder spot on nearly every corner, and they range from excellent to forgettable. Knowing which counters are cooking it fresh is most of the battle, and from the sidewalk they all look about the same.

Dylan’s Tours has led small-group tours of San Francisco for over 20 years, with 5,700+ five-star reviews and local guides who know where to eat around the Wharf. Below is where we send guests when they ask.

Dylan’s Famous Tour with Muir Woods drops back at the Wharf with the afternoon still ahead of you, or you can compare the full lineup of San Francisco tours to build the day that fits your trip.

Why Is San Francisco Clam Chowder Served in a Sourdough Bread Bowl?

Crab sandwich and clam chowder bread bowl at Fisherman's Wharf

The city’s sourdough goes back to the Gold Rush, when bakers fed a booming population on loaves raised with wild local yeast, and the fog turned out to be the ideal climate for it. That is the tang you taste. Boudin has been baking sourdough at the Wharf since 1849, and once the New England habit of clam chowder came west with the miners, pairing the soup with the city’s best-known bread was only a matter of time.

It isn’t how chowder started back east, but it’s the version that became San Francisco’s, and a sourdough bowl now anchors most of what you’ll find around the Wharf.

What Is in a San Francisco Clam Chowder?

Most of what you’ll be handed here is New England-style: creamy, thick, and pale, built on clams, potato, celery, onion, and bacon or salt pork, finished with heavy cream. West Coast kitchens often use local Pacific clams, sometimes left in the shell.

You’ll also spot Manhattan chowder on some menus. That one swaps the cream for tomato and comes out thinner and redder in the broth. It’s an old East Coast argument playing out on a West Coast menu.

Consistency is the other variable. Some kitchens keep it loose so it pools in the bread, others thicken it until a spoon stands up on its own. Neither is wrong. If you have a preference, ask before you order.

Best Clam Chowder at Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39

Pier 39 sign on waterfront building in San Francisco

These four sit within about a ten-minute walk of each other along Fisherman’s Wharf, so you can pick by mood, view, or how long you want to sit down.

  • Boudin Bakery, 160 Jefferson Street. The default, and the default is good. White New England chowder in one of the best sourdough bowls in the city, with an upstairs dining room over the water. Watch the bakers through the window on your way in.
  • Chowders, Pier 39. A quick counter-service spot with both the white New England and the red Manhattan on the menu, packed with clams, potato, celery, onion, and bacon. Fast, generous, and the easiest chowder stop on the pier.
  • Fog Harbor Fish House, Pier 39. A full sit-down seafood house known for its chowder, and it has the best bay views of this group.
  • Scoma’s, Pier 47. Out on its own pier, Scoma’s sends the chowder out piping hot with a pile of sourdough on the side rather than around it. The proper sit-down meal of the four.

Where Locals Go for Chowder Away From the Wharf

Waterfront restaurant sign advertising clam chowder near Fisherman's Wharf

A short walk or a quick ride buys you a very different bowl, and often a different San Francisco neighborhood entirely.

  • Sotto Mare, 552 Green Street, in North Beach. About ten minutes from the Wharf and the name locals hand out most often. Boston-style chowder, glossy and almost gravy-thick, with a cheerful menu note reminding you there’s bacon in it, plus endless free bread. There’s usually a wait, so grab a seat at the bar.
  • Hog Island Oyster Co., at the Ferry Building. Chowder in three sizes, from an 8oz cup to a 32oz bowl, with toasted bread cut for dipping. Add a dozen oysters and call it lunch. Time it for happy hour if you can.
  • The Old Clam House, 299 Bayshore Boulevard. Open since 1861, it’s the oldest restaurant in San Francisco still running in its original location, which is reason enough to make the trip.

If you’re already downtown or in the Castro, Tadich Grill and Anchor Oyster Bar both do a serious bowl. Tadich is the older room by more than a century. And if the tomato-and-seafood cousin sounds better to you, order cioppino, the stew that San Francisco’s Italian fishermen invented on the North Beach docks in the late 1800s.

How to Eat a Sourdough Bread Bowl

Couple holding sourdough bread bowls at Fisherman's Wharf

Lift the round lid off the top and use it as a first dipper. Eat the chowder down with a spoon while the bread walls are still firm. Save the soup-soaked sides and base for last, because by then they have drunk up the cream and turned into the best bite of the whole thing.

When to Go So You Are Not Queuing Behind a Coach Party

Chowder is a lunch dish here, and the Wharf lunch rush runs from about noon to 2. Arrive before 11:30 or after 2:30 and the lines are usually short.

Cool, grey, foggy days are the best chowder days, and they turn up all summer, so there’s no need to save it for winter. If you want it as a snack rather than a sit-down meal, the sidewalk crab stands along Jefferson Street sell cups to carry. A visitor eating chowder from a cup on a bench, watching the sea lions, has the right idea. It’s a cheap, easy stop with kids too, and one of many things to do in San Francisco within a few blocks of the water.

Our shop and meeting point sits at 2820 Taylor Street, right in the middle of all of this. Guests on the 2 PM departure often grab a bowl beforehand, and guests on the 9 AM come back for one after. If you’d rather have the day handled and the driving done for you, compare Dylan’s San Francisco tours and use code SF10 for $10 off when you book direct.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I get the best clam chowder near Fisherman’s Wharf?

Boudin Bakery on Jefferson Street for the sourdough bread bowl, Chowders at Pier 39 for a quick counter bowl with white or red on offer, and Scoma’s at Pier 47 for a sit-down version. All three are within a ten-minute walk of each other.

Who has the best clam chowder on Pier 39?

Chowders and Fog Harbor Fish House are the two names that come up most. Chowders is faster and cheaper, Fog Harbor has the views and the full-service dining room.

What is the difference between clam chowder in San Francisco and New England?

The soup itself is much the same flavor, creamy and thick and built on clams and potato. San Francisco serves it in a hollowed sourdough bowl, and West Coast kitchens sometimes use local Pacific clams left in the shell. New England chowder comes in a plain bowl with crackers.

Is the clam chowder at Fisherman’s Wharf worth it?

Yes, as long as you pick a place with a working kitchen. Boudin, Chowders, Fog Harbor, and Scoma’s all make it fresh. The sourdough bread bowl is a tourist thing, and it’s a good one.

Can I get vegetarian chowder in San Francisco?

Some kitchens serve a corn chowder or corn bisque in the same style of bread bowl. Ask about the base before ordering, since some are made with a seafood stock.

Great Tour, incorrect starting point information from Viator. The Tour and Tour conductor, Aaron, were great. The information that was given for a meeting point for this Tour starting point by Viator was incorrect on several event reminders. A call to Dillon Tours, the local operator, clarified the location for starting the tour.

This full day tour took... This full day tour took us all around SF to Muir Woods and Saulsalito. Trevor, a lifelong resident of SF, shared good knowledge about the history of the city with some fun personal experiences. He engaged all of the passengers in conversation and was truly interested in providing us the best experience possible. The time spent at each location was enough for me and he planned the route to save the best for last!

Well organised, friendly, good value double up tour. We had a great day that was guided by Laura. She was very personable and pointed out so many places of interest. She added in lots of anecdotes. We were in a small open air van and we really enjoyed that aspect of the tour. Hop on hop off tours are too onerous for me as I have some mobility issues. We did stop and get out at the Golden Gate Bridge and the Palace of fine arts. Lovely short stops! The pick up arrangements were clear and we were let out at the ferry landing for the Alcatraz ferry. Not everyone did that part of the tour but we were glad we did. Once at Alcatraz you get an audio set and it’s great. An added bonus for me was that a little trolley was available for anyone with mobility issues to take me up to the top to start the cell tour. It’s a steep climb.

Exactly what we wanted! An amazing trip! Exactly what we wanted and Patrick our tour guide was amazing. It’s a short city tour about an hour long, photo stop at Golden Gate Bridge and then onto Muir woods. Beautiful place and 90 minutes was just enough time to do just over an hour of walking (we went to bridge three and back) and then spent some time in the gift shop and cafe. There’s an option to get off in Sausalito on the way back if you want to explore more but we stayed on the shuttle and were taken back to our starting point. Patrick provided lots of great facts, jokes and music along the way. Would highly recommend Dylan’s Tours!

Excellent way to see San Francisco I believe the tour guide I had for this tour was named Waymond - he was an excellent guide. A bit of an odd structure to this tour, because it was summer we did the Alcatraz tour first, if you are interested in the prison you’ll enjoy the tour. So, you get sent a QR code which is your ticket to the island, and it is all self guided, so the tour was for 9.20, and then the next part of the tour starts at 2pm which is the city and muir woods trip. So you have to entertain yourself until 2pm basically, the trip to muir woods was nice, Jules was an enjoyable driver providing us with lots of interesting facts about the area. We stopped at the museum of fine are for a photo and then on the north side of the golden gate bridge for a photo, then to muir woods park for a walk around for 1.5 hours, and then another drive around the city before being dropped off. So there isn’t really a guided tour besides maybe the drive through the city, really what you are paying for is the transportation to these places and then you need to pay $15 to enter the park. Good trip, bit overpriced.

Even after we ran 15 mins behind at Muir Woods ( no fault to our tour guide ) the restaurant was still holding our table because they “ they just knew we were coming” Thank you Dylan and Patrick for such a great day! The post is inaccurate the host informed me over the phone that the tour is actually 4 hours and that they spend about 15 minutes at each of the locations aside from Muir Woods where you will spend an hour. I was told over the phone that I could cancel because the listing is inaccurate but they stopped replying after. You’re better off going to these locations on your own which is what I did. save your money.

the trip to Muir woods was magical and our guide Jeffrey was fun and knowledgeable. I could have used another hour in the woods just to longer and savor the environment but didn't feel rushed - just left wanting more. I loved the photo stops along the way - easiet way to get a great bridge photo! lunch in Sausalito was fun too. great recommendations and good food.

Great deal and value, our guide was knowledgeable of the city and always willing to take photos. Also he was very accommodating to drop us off at the location close to where we were going after the tour, as long as he was passing it. The only thing that was annoying was waiting for people who were late. It tells you to arrive 20-15 mins before the tour but we still had to wait for 2 people and then wait for people again on each stop, not the driver’s fault, just need to be more strict with time cus it’s not fair for many of us.

It was a wonderful day touring San Francisco, muir woods, and Sausalito with our guide Kevin! He was full of interesting information delivered in a fun conversational way. It was a good mix of sightseeing and walking and we saw SO much. I highly recommend this tour company!!!

We took the tour today that included Muir Woods. Our tour guide, Joe M.,was phenomenal! He had lots of knowledge and tips for our stay. He was very comical, too! Plenty of time to enjoy each stop. We're so glad we took this tour!

Has a great time touring San Francisco, the Muir Woods, and Alcatraz. Our tour guide, Sully, was very informative, funny, and helpful. He made the trip very enjoyable! I highly recommended Dylan’s Tours! Would definitely use them again and try one of the other tours available when we come back!!

Did a tour this weekend that went to Muir Woods, Alcatraz, stopped in Sausalito, and a couple other spots. Was very smooth from pick up to drop off. We landed in the city very early am and debated cancelling the tour but were glad we didn’t. Patrick kept the ride lively as well. Would recommend to anyone traveling to San Francisco.

I went on a tour with Sully and cannot recommend it enough. Sully was extremely knowledgeable and funny. He had so much to tell us about San Francisco. We went to so many places and I feel like the tour covered just enough. The bus was clean and we were offered water and a snack upon the start of the tour. Muir Woods was my favorite part of the trip. I think anyone visiting should book one of the bus tours! You won’t regret it!
