When to Visit Wine Country for the Best Winery Tour

As you’re planning your trip for Napa Valley wine tasting, the first thing you’ll want to consider is the timing. So, when is the best time of year for wine tasting in Northern California?

If you can, we recommend scheduling your visit during the harvest season, from August to October.

Along with classic wine tastings, you can expect to participate in harvest dinners, grape smashing events, and street fairs. Overall, It’s the best time of year to truly experience the artistic and romantic spirit of winemaking. Furthermore, reservations book up quickly during this time period. Due to the increased number of visitors, we suggest booking harvest season tastings, accommodations, and tours well in advance.

While we recommend planning your trip to Napa over the harvest season, you really can’t go wrong when it comes to timing your visit to Wine Country. The valley is known for its mild year-round temperatures. Whether you come in autumn, winter, spring, or summer, the beautiful rolling landscape covered in vineyards will make a striking backdrop to your visit.

And remember, no matter what season you come in, the wineries will be open for tasting!

Monticello Vineyards

Established in 1970, Monticello remains one of the few family-owned wineries in the valley. They truly have a relationship with the soil that spans over decades. They have learned to create award-winning, estate-grown wines of singular quality and distinction.

From planting and pruning to harvest and crush, and from barrel to bottle. Monticello handcrafts its wines in small batches. They’ve been devoting meticulous care to every step of the winemaking journey!

Through decades of familiarity with the land, Monticello is able to capture the best of the distinct soils of the five vineyards they farm. Because these vineyards span the length of the Napa Valley! They start at the southern end in the Oak Knoll District, and moving north to Yountville, Rutherford, and St. Helena. Such diverse lands allow Monticello wines to reflect the entirety of the valley. Equally, they express the subtleties and sense of place of each of these unique locations.

Tasting Options

They currently offer two tasting options in the tasting room of their estate. Modeled after Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, it was built in the Palladian architectural style of the Italian Renaissance. The Estate Tasting is $45 per person, with an educational tasting of 5 different varietals all estate grown.

Explore the diversity of the Napa Valley! The Reserve Tasting is $65 per person, focusing on “The King” Cabernet Sauvignon. You will sample 5 limited production Cabernet Sauvignon and Cab blends, and understand why the locals call this remarkable wine “The King” with a fittingly royal tasting! You can also upgrade any tasting with a charcuterie plate or platter. Reservations are for up to 8 guests, and are recommended for all tastings.

Location

They are located at 4242 Big Ranch Rd. just south of Oak Knoll Avenue, between Highway 29 and Silverado Trail.

James Cole Winery

Ru Vango

Loosely translating to “Road to Art”, Ru Vango keeps that phrase near to their heart as they craft their wines, starting in their beautiful vineyards. They have two locations in the Napa Valley Region: Spring Mountain & Carneros. They boast their ability to farm the land and let the terrior speak through their wine.

Their estate wines include Pinot Noir & Chardonnay grown in their Carneros Vineyard and Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, & Merlot grown in their Spring Mountain Vineyard. Their owners are American entrepreneurs and philanthropists, originally from Vietnam, who fell in love with the land and have started making something special in every bottle produced!

Tasting Options

They offer both tasting and tours, with tastings starting at $45 per person. Parties of 6 or more are welcome, and you must book your reservation in advance. They allow guests to bring their own food on their beautiful premises.

Location

Ru Vango Winery Tasting Room is located in Napa Valley in the Carneros District. The Carneros District is the southernmost grape-growing region in Napa Valley. The fog and evening breeze off nearby San Pablo Bay make the Carneros area the coolest wine producing region in the valley, ideal for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. They offer a curated collection of fine art exclusively featured in their art gallery provided by Winn Slavin Fine Art Beverly Hills. Come join them for a sophisticated wine tasting and experience these gorgeous pieces of “existential surrealism” for yourself!

Their second property is located in the Spring Mountain District. Located above 2,000 feet, it has seven acres of vines. Ru Vango Winery will be producing its high-end limited production out of Spring Mountain.

Frog’s Leap Winery

Believing that a grapevine should be grown in healthy soil that supports all the nutrient needs of the plant, Frog’s Leap has been farming organically since 1988. Simultaneously they also believe that most of the great and historical wines of the world have been made from non-irrigated grapevines, and to that end Frog’s Leap farms all of its vineyards without irrigation. To put it simply, they don’t make great wine, they grow it.

Their story starts in 1972, when founder John Williams obtained an internship at Taylor Wine Company, and falls in love with wine. Shortly after, he agrees to start a winery with his friend that coins the clever official motto: “Time’s fun when you’re having flies!” And from there, they sell their motorcycles to raise the cash to launch the project, producing their first wine in 1981. From their first Frog’s Leap wine released that year– a 1981 Sauvignon Blanc–  Frog’s Leap has produced a masterful selection of wines produced from their lush 40 acre Rutherford vineyards.

Tasting Options

They have a few enticing options to choose from for your wine tasting experience, and you must reserve an appointment. The first is the Signature Seated Tasting, at $45 a person. From their Vineyard House porch overlooking the gardens, you will enjoy a flight of five wines including their most popular releases alongside a rotating selection of winery-only favorites.

A complimentary snack plate is provided. Next is their Guided Tour and Tasting,  at $75 per person, where you will explore the origins of their wines, from growing grapes organically from their dry-farmed vineyards to fermentation, barrel, cask and bottle. Enjoy an intimate walking tour that culminated in a relaxing seated tasting of six wines, featuring selections from their limited and library releases. This is a shared, 90 minute experience.

Lastly, Rooted in Rutherford is a $95 experience that explores and learned about what makes the Rutherford area so spectacular for winemaking. Merlots, Cabernet Sauvignons, and Sauvignon Blancs are grown from the roots of Rutherford, and you will try special and rare vintages, and small lot wines. This is a shared 90-minute walking tour and elevated tasting experience! They also even offer interactive wine tasting experiences that you can check out here.

Location

Frog’s Leap is located at 8815 Conn Creek Road, in Rutherfield, California.

Laird Family Estate

Laird is founded by a farming family with nearly 50 years of experience growing grapes in the Napa Valley. With more than 2,000 acres of planted vineyards, they sell 97% of their grapes to other premium wineries and reserve just 3% for their own Laird Family Estate, which was established in 1999. Their vineyards produce particular grape varieties that thrive from the thick fog and marine winds to the volcanic soils mixed with ancient coastal deposits in the lower bench of the Mayacamas Mountains. And they farm their vineyards to produce fruit that best complements those hallmarks of the land! They strive to produce wines that are “a window to a place”, each being different in expression, with its own subtle, yet distinctive character and voice.

Enjoy a relaxing atmosphere at their winery where you can sample five of their current releases. Their elevated tasting room and patios offer a panoramic view of Napa Valley. Learn about the Laird story, as well as the wines, with their informed and friendly staff. At Laird Family Estate, their outlook is that you’re always a member of the family! The maximum group size they accept is 12 guests, including non-drinkers and kids. They also hold events at their estate, such as Lairdapalooza, and Harvest Party!

Tasting Options

Laird offers a number of wine tasting options, firstly with their Mixed Wine Tasting at $50 per flight. Enjoy a flight of five of their most popular white and red wines. Next is their Red Wine Tasting, where you can savor a flight of five red wines. These span from medium to full-bodied. In this tasting that starts at $60 per flight (complementary with a $120 wine purchase!), discover the diverse nuances between Cabernet Sauvignons.

The Pyramid Tasting is a sensory food and wine pairing experience that is $125 per person. The pairing is composed of an assortment of small bites developed to pair perfectly with five of their distinguished wines. You will learn about how wine enhances food and how food brings out the complexity and flavors in wine. This experience is limited to a maximum of 6 guests at a time, and reservations must be made at least 72 hours ahead of time.

Finally, their Winery Tour & Tasting at $125 per person takes an up-close look into the world of winemaking. Your designated tour guide will walk you throughout the winery and you will get to see some of the winemakers in action! This experience includes a tour, a flight of 5 Laird wines, a charcuterie board, and chocolate truffles. They also offer bottle service, and blankets that you can grab from the tasting room. You can sprawl them out on the lawn, surrounded by vineyards. This is a great option for those of you who are looking for a private space where you can enjoy wine…and the company of your companion(s) as you take in the beautiful scenery around you, of course!

Napa Valley Transportation: How to Safely Journey Through Napa

Now that you’ve discovered some of the top wineries in Napa Valley, the next big question is: what is the best way to get to Wine Country from San Francisco?

Sure, you could plan it yourself. You could rent a car, study a Napa winery map, and find someone willing to be the designated driver (and miss out on wine tasting). Or you could attempt the train-and-bus route, making multiple transfers and then scrambling to book Ubers between wineries—since most of Napa’s best wineries aren’t within walking distance of each other or downtown. Add in transit delays, surge pricing, and coordinating pickups in rural areas, and it can quickly become stressful instead of relaxing.

Another thing to keep in mind as you plan your visit to Napa is transportation between wineries. Even if you manage to get from winery to winery, there’s still the challenge of planning your route, securing reservations, and knowing which vineyards are actually worth your time. Without insider guidance, it’s easy to miss out on hidden gems and spend your day stuck in crowds.

That’s why Napa wine tours are a smarter, better-value choice.

With Dylan’s Wine Country Tour, everything is handled for you—transportation, timing, winery access, even local tips. You get to relax, taste freely, and enjoy the day without worrying about directions, parking, or who’s stuck driving. Plus, experienced guides have relationships with top wineries and know the boutique spots most visitors never find.

Prefer not to join a small group? Our private Wine Country tours are perfect if you want a fully customized day—your schedule, your wineries, your pace—with all the logistics seamlessly taken care of.

Common Questions About Napa Valley Wine Tasting

How much does a typical wine tasting cost?

Tasting fees in Napa and Sonoma generally range from $35 to $65 per winery, and premium estates can go higher. With Dylan’s tours, tasting fees are included, saving you time and money while ensuring access to top wineries.

Do I need to make a reservation to try Napa wine?

Yes — most wineries now require reservations, especially on weekends. When you book a Dylan’s tour, we handle all winery reservations for you, so you can relax and focus on the experience.

What is proper wine tasting etiquette or good tasting tips?

Keep it simple: be respectful, avoid heavy perfumes, and feel free to ask questions — winery hosts love sharing their knowledge. It’s perfectly acceptable to pour out wine you don’t finish.

How many wineries should wine lovers visit in a day?

Two to three wineries is ideal — enough to enjoy a variety without rushing. Dylan’s tours are curated around the perfect pace, including time for an optional third wine tasting in Sonoma Square.

Are there wineries within walking distance for a Napa itinerary?

In downtown Napa or Sonoma, yes — but most top wineries are spread throughout the valley and require transportation. That’s why a guided tour is the easiest way to explore safely and efficiently.

Can I visit wineries with a large group?

Many wineries limit group sizes or require special booking. Dylan’s offers Private Wine Country Tours designed specifically for groups, ensuring seamless access and VIP treatment.

What is the best time to visit Napa Valley for wine tasting?

Harvest season (August–October) is the most popular, but spring and early summer offer beautiful weather and fewer crowds. With Dylan’s Tours, tours run year-round, each season offering something unique.

Should I tip tasting hosts and staff?

Tipping isn’t always required but is appreciated, especially for exceptional service. A few dollars per person or a shared tip from the group is customary.

What should I wear to a wine tasting?

Smart casual works best — think comfortable shoes, layered clothing, and something you’ll feel good being photographed in. Vineyards can be dusty, so avoid delicate footwear.

How long does a typical wine tasting last?

Most tastings last 60 to 90 minutes. Our itineraries are built to give you plenty of time to enjoy each stop without feeling rushed.

Should I eat before or during a wine tasting?

Absolutely. Wine on an empty stomach is never a good idea. Many wineries offer cheese or charcuterie, and our tours include a lunch break in Sonoma Square with plenty of dining options.

Can beginners enjoy wine tastings?

Definitely. You don’t need to be an expert — just curious. Our guides and winery hosts love introducing newcomers to the world of wine.

Is Napa or Sonoma better for wine tasting?

Napa is known for bold Cabernet and polished estates, while Sonoma offers a more relaxed, rustic charm. They are both must-visits when in California Wine Country! With Dylan’s, you can experience both in one tour.

Are there any special group Napa Valley wine tour or experience I should consider?

Yes — consider our Private Wine Country Tours for custom itineraries, exclusive wineries, or celebrating special occasions. Ideal for couples, families, and groups. Dylan’s Wine Country Tour is perfect if you’re looking for an affordable way to experience the best of Napa and Sonoma. Enjoy tastings at incredible wineries in BOTH Napa and Sonoma, and discover why this region is a hit with wine lovers globally. You’ll have time for an additional wine tasting in Sonoma Plaza, if you’d like.

Our driver Patrick on the Lombard Leap tour was amazing! He was so relaxed with our group with so much knowledge of San Francisco and a great sense of humor. He told us to ask any questions and was so gracious in answering everything with even additional information. He made sure we had plenty of time for photo ops as well. Offered to drop us off at points of interest at the end of tour. I can’t imagine going on a different tour!

We went on the Muir Woods excursion out of San Francisco. Aaron was so good as our Guide and bus driver. We were in a 25 passenger bus that was very comfortable. Aaron‘s narration was personal, funny, and caring. He went to the extra mile every time someone needed something right down to delivering us to the cruise ship rather than the fisherman’s wharf. as planned

Dylan’s Tours isn’t just another operator in the travel industry—it’s in a class of its own. Our guide, Kevin, didn’t recite facts; he rebuilt San Francisco in front of us. For more than four hours he turned streets, hills, and waterfront into a living timeline—places, people, turning-point events, and a city that has never stopped reinventing itself. It felt less like a tour and more like stepping into the city’s memory. Kevin is a born storyteller who never once let safety slip. He kept the group laughing, invited every question, and made four-plus hours fly by. Knowledgeable, funny, and completely in command—Kevin is the kind of guide companies hope they have and guests hope they get. He’s a genuine asset to Dylan’s Tours.

Kevin - The Greatest Tour Guide for San Francisco and the world. So informitave and helpful. Very careful not to upset anyone when asked if driverless cars had ever hurt anyone. (Ask him about the cat called "King")! Great driving tour that covered so much of San Fran town and around areas. This tour is a really good start to your San Fran holiday - as Kevin gives you lots of ideas and options of what you can do depending on your interests. Muir Woods is so good to see and Kevin gave great advice on timing as to how far you could walk within time allocations (plenty of time even if you had walking speed limitations). Kevin also stops for the best photo opportunities- especially The Precidio and The Golden Gate Bridge. Very humble but entertaining guy. THANK YOU Kevin. Best Regards The girls from NZ

The guide was knowledgeable and both him and the driver kept us on track throughout the city so we could see as many sights as possible. The booking process had wonderful service as well.

Our guide was Patrick. You will be VERY lucky if you land him. Knowledgeable.. funny.. entertaining 100% of the time. Interactive with all guests. I’ve taken dozens of tours and he is definitely the best I’ve ever had. I would recommend Dylan’s tours to anyone wanting to learn about San Francisco.

Great Tour, incorrect starting point information from Viator. The Tour and Tour conductor, Aaron, were great. The information that was given for a meeting point for this Tour starting point by Viator was incorrect on several event reminders. A call to Dillon Tours, the local operator, clarified the location for starting the tour.

Great Value I took the all day trip through the neighborhoods of San Francisco Sausalito and Muir Woods, 7 hours. Definitely worth the money for the amount of time and the insights of the local guide.

This full day tour took... This full day tour took us all around SF to Muir Woods and Saulsalito. Trevor, a lifelong resident of SF, shared good knowledge about the history of the city with some fun personal experiences. He engaged all of the passengers in conversation and was truly interested in providing us the best experience possible. The time spent at each location was enough for me and he planned the route to save the best for last!

Well organised, friendly, good value double up tour. We had a great day that was guided by Laura. She was very personable and pointed out so many places of interest. She added in lots of anecdotes. We were in a small open air van and we really enjoyed that aspect of the tour. Hop on hop off tours are too onerous for me as I have some mobility issues. We did stop and get out at the Golden Gate Bridge and the Palace of fine arts. Lovely short stops! The pick up arrangements were clear and we were let out at the ferry landing for the Alcatraz ferry. Not everyone did that part of the tour but we were glad we did. Once at Alcatraz you get an audio set and it’s great. An added bonus for me was that a little trolley was available for anyone with mobility issues to take me up to the top to start the cell tour. It’s a steep climb.

Exactly what we wanted! An amazing trip! Exactly what we wanted and Patrick our tour guide was amazing. It’s a short city tour about an hour long, photo stop at Golden Gate Bridge and then onto Muir woods. Beautiful place and 90 minutes was just enough time to do just over an hour of walking (we went to bridge three and back) and then spent some time in the gift shop and cafe. There’s an option to get off in Sausalito on the way back if you want to explore more but we stayed on the shuttle and were taken back to our starting point. Patrick provided lots of great facts, jokes and music along the way. Would highly recommend Dylan’s Tours!

Sit back and relax… Easiest way to see some of the more interesting attractions on limited time without the stress of having to manage on your own. Show up on time and get taken care of the rest of the day! I appreciated being able to sit back and enjoy the experience rather than worrying about navigation, schedule, driving, parking, etc.,. Would recommend the Alcatraz add-on.

Excellent way to see San Francisco I believe the tour guide I had for this tour was named Waymond - he was an excellent guide. I especially loved his knowledge of music and local musicians, and that he played songs in each neighbourhood from artists that either lived there or wrote music locally. I loved that it was a small group of only 5 of us too. 100% would recommend this tour to anybody visiting SF!

A bit of an odd structure to this tour, because it was summer we did the Alcatraz tour first, if you are interested in the prison you’ll enjoy the tour. So, you get sent a QR code which is your ticket to the island, and it is all self guided, so the tour was for 9.20, and then the next part of the tour starts at 2pm which is the city and muir woods trip. So you have to entertain yourself until 2pm basically, the trip to muir woods was nice, Jules was an enjoyable driver providing us with lots of interesting facts about the area. We stopped at the museum of fine are for a photo and then on the north side of the golden gate bridge for a photo, then to muir woods park for a walk around for 1.5 hours, and then another drive around the city before being dropped off. So there isn’t really a guided tour besides maybe the drive through the city, really what you are paying for is the transportation to these places and then you need to pay $15 to enter the park. Good trip, bit overpriced.

What an incredible experience! Dylan was our host for the day. The tour and conversation was great! Patrick and Dylan got my husband and I a reservation at the Barrel house on Valentine’s Day in Sausalito. Even after we ran 15 mins behind at Muir Woods ( no fault to our tour guide ) the restaurant was still holding our table because they “ they just knew we were coming” Thank you Dylan and Patrick for such a great day! You are our two favorite people in San Francisco!

The post is inaccurate the host informed me over the phone that the tour is actually 4 hours and that they spend about 15 minutes at each of the locations aside from Muir Woods where you will spend an hour. I was told over the phone that I could cancel because the listing is inaccurate but they stopped replying after. You’re better off going to these locations on your own which is what I did. save your money.

the trip to Muir woods was magical and our guide Jeffrey was fun and knowledgeable. I could have used another hour in the woods just to longer and savor the environment but didn't feel rushed - just left wanting more. I loved the photo stops along the way - easiet way to get a great bridge photo! lunch in Sausalito was fun too. great recommendations and good food.

Great deal and value, our guide was knowledgeable of the city and always willing to take photos. Also he was very accommodating to drop us off at the location close to where we were going after the tour, as long as he was passing it. The only thing that was annoying was waiting for people who were late. It tells you to arrive 20-15 mins before the tour but we still had to wait for 2 people and then wait for people again on each stop, not the driver’s fault, just need to be more strict with time cus it’s not fair for many of us.

I went on a tour with Sully and cannot recommend it enough. Sully was extremely knowledgeable and funny. He had so much to tell us about San Francisco. We went to so many places and I feel like the tour covered just enough. The bus was clean and we were offered water and a snack upon the start of the tour. Muir Woods was my favorite part of the trip. I think anyone visiting should book one of the bus tours! You won’t regret it!
