Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway in the city or a short trip mid-week, we’ve got the best ideas to help you make the most of your 2 days in San Francisco. Keep reading to learn about our top picks for popular sights and local favorites!

San Francisco is one of the top tourist destinations in the world and it can be overwhelming to plan your activities here, especially if you are only visiting San Francisco for two days.

It’s a vibrant city with tons of culture, art, and food. And all surrounded by the beautiful natural landscape of Northern California!

To help make a short trip to San Francisco go smoothly for you, we’ve put together this guide to 2 days in San Francisco. There’s something here for everyone!

San Francisco in 2 days: Before You Go

It’s important to start off your San Francisco itinerary by choosing a place to stay. For easy access to the best activities, choose from one of the many hotels in Fisherman’s Wharf or North Beach!

If you like to travel in style and want luxury by the waterfront, you should consider staying at the Fairmount Heritage Place at Ghiradelli Square. For more budget-friendly options around Fisherman’s Wharf, visit our post outlining all of the best hotels in the area!

To experience a smaller, more local neighborhood we recommend staying at a hotel in North Beach. For a cozy boutique inn experience check out the Washington Square Inn in North Beach. It’s perfect for a romantic weekend in San Francisco!

Now that you are settled into your hotel and ready to hit the ground running, here are some of our favorite fun activities in San Francisco. These days are pretty jam-packed so you can also pick and choose what works best for your pace.

Day 1: What to See in San Francisco in 2 Days

Morning Activities

Start your San Francisco getaway at the Ferry Building Marketplace, home to many gourmet shops and restaurants. Grab a coffee at Blue Bottle and a pastry at Acme Bread Company and enjoy the fantastic views out across the Bay.

If you are there on a Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday, you may even stumble into the Ferry Building Farmer’s Market. This is a great place to browse the best local produce and artisan foods!

Then, walk north along the Embarcadero making your way to Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf— here’s our insider guide to Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39. This walk takes about 30 minutes and is one of the most scenic walks in the city. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of the Bay Bridge, Angel Island, and Alcatraz.

If walking isn’t for you, or if you want to get there faster, we offer San Francisco bike rentals for discounted prices! Our rental location is in North Beach, so you’ll be all set to ride along the waterfront with ease.

*If you are traveling with kids we highly recommend a stop along the way at the Exploratorium. This museum of science, art, and human perception features hundreds of interactive exhibits, great for kids (and adults) of all ages!

Afternoon Activities

If you really want to make the most of your short trip, we recommend Dylan’s 2-Day Alcatraz Experience. This two-day experience takes you to San Francisco’s most popular neighborhoods and then out to Muir Woods to explore some of the last remaining coastal redwoods. On day two in San Francisco, you’ll spend the afternoon on an Official Alcatraz Island tour.

Another option for your afternoon is to wander around North Beach on foot. For lunch, we suggest you grab a slice at Tony’s Pizza or Golden Boy Pizza. After lunch, take a North Beach/Little Italy walking tour to really soak in the history of this iconic neighborhood!

If you are more interested in doing your own thing and embracing the Beat Generation history of the area, don’t miss City Lights Books and Vesuvio for a cocktail.

Walking up to Coit Tower is another option for the more active travelers, and there is also city bus 39 that will take you up the hill.

It’s fairly easy to navigate the city’s public transportation system (Called Muni), especially with the Muni Mobile App.

It’s free to walk around inside and view the historic murals at Coit Tower, but there is a charge to ride the elevator to the top. But never fear! If you don’t have the energy to make it up there, Coit Tower’s iconic shape is visible from many parts of North Beach.

Learn More About 2-Day Alcatraz Experience

Evening Activities

It wouldn’t be a great two days in San Francisco without taking advantage of the thriving nightlife scene in the city.

After having dinner at one of the many Italian restaurants in North Beach, catch some stand-up at Cobb’s Comedy Club, Music at Bimbo’s 365, or go bar hopping on Grant Ave. With these options, you are sure to have a memorable night!

Day 2: What to See in San Francisco in 2 Days

Morning Activities

It can be hard to choose what to do in San Francisco in 2 days because there are so many options! Our choice is to spend your day visiting one of the city’s most popular destinations: Golden Gate Park.

Now we will mention that Golden Gate Park is HUGE. It spans over 3 miles from East to West and is actually larger than New York City’s Central Park. So, it’s important to pick and choose from the many attractions within the park and not try to do the whole thing in one day.

For a short 2 days in San Francisco, we recommend just visiting 2-3 of the many museums and gardens in the park.

Start your day off at:

  1. Conservatory of Flowers for plant enthusiasts OR
  2. The deYoung Museum for those more interested in fine art OR
  3. If you are traveling with children you cannot miss the California Academy of Sciences, which features an aquarium, rainforest, planetarium, and many other exciting exhibits.

Then choose between the Japanese Tea Garden or the Botanical Gardens to appreciate some of the unique outdoor features of the park.

If you are feeling energetic and want to cover more distance, try out a bike tour of the Golden Gate that goes through the park! This is a great way to visit some of the lesser-known sights.

Afternoon Activities For Your 2 Days In San Francisco

Some of these places have lunch options, but since this is not your average San Francisco travel blog we recommend venturing into the Sunset District next to the park to try some of the best local food.

For elevated Mexican food check out Nopalito on 9th Ave., and if you are craving Chinese we suggest San Tung on Irving between 11th and 12th Ave.

From there, hop in a ride-sharing service or taxi to make your way up to Twin Peaks. You will be greeted with one of the best views of the city and a great spot for some photo opportunities.

Evening Activities

Once you post the perfect Instagram, head down through the Castro neighborhood to grab a drink or bite to eat in the Mission. This can be a fun walk (it’s downhill!) if you have the energy, but it’s also a quick car ride.

Dine with locals at Delfina Restaurant or Pizzeria Delfina next door. For cocktails or many more food options, venture a bit farther to Valencia street.

We’ll admit that it’s impossible to see all of San Francisco in 2 days. There are endless sights, attractions, restaurants, and cool neighborhoods to explore. But, for a short trip, these are some of our favorite things to do, and we’re sure you’ll be planning to come back in no time!

We had a fantastic afternoon on the Muir Woods tour. Jules, our guide, was knowledgeable and very friendly. We learned a few new things about the area, got to see the Golden Gate Bridge, and stand in awe under the redwoods. Would definitely recommend Dylan’s Tours for your time in San Francisco.

We learned so much about the city and went to great places and got great photographs. We felt very safe in the van and enjoyed our time in Muir woods. Highly recommend. We did the half-day tour.

This full day tour took... This full day tour took us all around SF to Muir Woods and Saulsalito. Trevor, a lifelong resident of SF, shared good knowledge about the history of the city with some fun personal experiences. He engaged all of the passengers in conversation and was truly interested in providing us the best experience possible. The time spent at each location was enough for me and he planned the route to save the best for last!

Well organised, friendly, good value double up tour. We had a great day that was guided by Laura. She was very personable and pointed out so many places of interest. She added in lots of anecdotes. We were in a small open air van and we really enjoyed that aspect of the tour. Hop on hop off tours are too onerous for me as I have some mobility issues. We did stop and get out at the Golden Gate Bridge and the Palace of fine arts. Lovely short stops! The pick up arrangements were clear and we were let out at the ferry landing for the Alcatraz ferry. Not everyone did that part of the tour but we were glad we did. Once at Alcatraz you get an audio set and it’s great. An added bonus for me was that a little trolley was available for anyone with mobility issues to take me up to the top to start the cell tour. It’s a steep climb.

Exactly what we wanted! An amazing trip! Exactly what we wanted and Patrick our tour guide was amazing. It’s a short city tour about an hour long, photo stop at Golden Gate Bridge and then onto Muir woods. Beautiful place and 90 minutes was just enough time to do just over an hour of walking (we went to bridge three and back) and then spent some time in the gift shop and cafe. There’s an option to get off in Sausalito on the way back if you want to explore more but we stayed on the shuttle and were taken back to our starting point. Patrick provided lots of great facts, jokes and music along the way. Would highly recommend Dylan’s Tours!

Sit back and relax… Easiest way to see some of the more interesting attractions on limited time without the stress of having to manage on your own. Show up on time and get taken care of the rest of the day! I appreciated being able to sit back and enjoy the experience rather than worrying about navigation, schedule, driving, parking, etc.,. Would recommend the Alcatraz add-on.

Excellent way to see San Francisco I believe the tour guide I had for this tour was named Waymond - he was an excellent guide. I especially loved his knowledge of music and local musicians, and that he played songs in each neighbourhood from artists that either lived there or wrote music locally. I loved that it was a small group of only 5 of us too. 100% would recommend this tour to anybody visiting SF!

A bit of an odd structure to this tour, because it was summer we did the Alcatraz tour first, if you are interested in the prison you’ll enjoy the tour. So, you get sent a QR code which is your ticket to the island, and it is all self guided, so the tour was for 9.20, and then the next part of the tour starts at 2pm which is the city and muir woods trip. So you have to entertain yourself until 2pm basically, the trip to muir woods was nice, Jules was an enjoyable driver providing us with lots of interesting facts about the area. We stopped at the museum of fine are for a photo and then on the north side of the golden gate bridge for a photo, then to muir woods park for a walk around for 1.5 hours, and then another drive around the city before being dropped off. So there isn’t really a guided tour besides maybe the drive through the city, really what you are paying for is the transportation to these places and then you need to pay $15 to enter the park. Good trip, bit overpriced.

It was a good tour but a few things to consider. South saulito we thought were were going to be able to get out and tour around the area so that is not what we got. If we knew it was just driving thru for the price we paid it was not worth the money. We should have paid for Muir Woods and Alcatraz only but guide does not stay with u in Alcatraz. So the money you pay really is just to drive to Muir Woods. So that was disappointed . Will I pay again for this I would say no

What an incredible experience! Dylan was our host for the day. The tour and conversation was great! Patrick and Dylan got my husband and I a reservation at the Barrel house on Valentine’s Day in Sausalito. Even after we ran 15 mins behind at Muir Woods ( no fault to our tour guide ) the restaurant was still holding our table because they “ they just knew we were coming” Thank you Dylan and Patrick for such a great day! The post is inaccurate the host informed me over the phone that the tour is actually 4 hours and that they spend about 15 minutes at each of the locations aside from Muir Woods where you will spend an hour. I was told over the phone that I could cancel because the listing is inaccurate but they stopped replying after. You’re better off going to these locations on your own which is what I did. save your money.

the trip to Muir woods was magical and our guide Jeffrey was fun and knowledgeable. I could have used another hour in the woods just to longer and savor the environment but didn't feel rushed - just left wanting more. I loved the photo stops along the way - easiet way to get a great bridge photo! lunch in Sausalito was fun too. great recommendations and good food.

Great deal and value, our guide was knowledgeable of the city and always willing to take photos. Also he was very accommodating to drop us off at the location close to where we were going after the tour, as long as he was passing it. The only thing that was annoying was waiting for people who were late. It tells you to arrive 20-15 mins before the tour but we still had to wait for 2 people and then wait for people again on each stop, not the driver’s fault, just need to be more strict with time cus it’s not fair for many of us.

We took the tour today that included Muir Woods. Our tour guide, Joe M.,was phenomenal! He had lots of knowledge and tips for our stay. He was very comical, too! Plenty of time to enjoy each stop. We're so glad we took this tour!

Has a great time touring San Francisco, the Muir Woods, and Alcatraz. Our tour guide, Sully, was very informative, funny, and helpful. He made the trip very enjoyable! I highly recommended Dylan’s Tours! Would definitely use them again and try one of the other tours available when we come back!!

Did a tour this weekend that went to Muir Woods, Alcatraz, stopped in Sausalito, and a couple other spots. Was very smooth from pick up to drop off. We landed in the city very early am and debated cancelling the tour but were glad we didn’t. Patrick kept the ride lively as well. Would recommend to anyone traveling to San Francisco.

I went on a tour with Sully and cannot recommend it enough. Sully was extremely knowledgeable and funny. He had so much to tell us about San Francisco. We went to so many places and I feel like the tour covered just enough. The bus was clean and we were offered water and a snack upon the start of the tour. Muir Woods was my favorite part of the trip. I think anyone visiting should book one of the bus tours! You won’t regret it!
