Muir Woods Parking Guide

Yes, there is Muir Woods park. However, the Muir Woods parking lot is not that big, and parking is minimal.

To park you need a Muir Woods parking reservation, which you are required to make online before you get to the monument. There are no parking permits sold onsite, and there is no cell reception or WiFi, which will stop you from making a last minute reservation on your phone. Muir Woods parking will cost you $8.50 per vehicle.

One other thing that is important to know about the Muir Woods parking reservation is that having an online parking reservation doesn’t mean there will be a spot waiting for you once you get to the Muir Woods parking lot. It only means that you are allowed to park, once a parking space becomes available. There is a good chance that you will have to drive around the parking lot for a while. Muir Woods parking isn’t the easiest, which is one of the biggest reasons why we created so many tours that visit Muir Woods, like our Bike the Bridge & Shuttle to Muir Woods. Instead of you worrying about driving the winding road up the mountain or having to deal with booking and finding parking, you can enjoy a stress-free tour. You bike across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito and then hop on our private shuttle and let us take you up the mountain to Muir Woods.

Muir Woods FAQ’s

What days is Muir Woods closed?

Muir Woods is open 365 days a year. It is open for every holiday and weekend, so you can explore the forest whenever you decide to visit San Francisco and the Bay Area.

Muir woods opens at 8 am every day of the year and it closes around sunset. Depending on the season, closing time is between 5 pm – 8 pm. Below is a guide to closing times, click here for exact dates.

November – February  8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
February – April  8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
April – May 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
May – August 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
August – September 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
September – October 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
November – December 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

What is the Muir Woods entrance fee?

Muir Woods admission varies in price for different ages. Kids who are 15 and under are free, and the Muir Woods cost for anyone 16 and older is $15. Don’t let grabbing your Muir Woods tickets be another thing you have to worry about. If you book one of Dylan’s Muir Woods tours, the Muir Woods transport and parking fee is taken care of for you, although you still have to pay for your entrance to the park itself.

When is Muir Woods free?

Guess what? There are five days in 2019 when Muir Woods tickets are free! The monument will probably be busy on these days, but if you are in the Bay Area on any of the below dates, why not explore the beautiful forest for free?

2022 Free Days:
January 17 – Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
April 16 – First Day of National Park Week/National Junior Ranger Day
August 4 – One year anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act
August 25 – National Park Service Birthday
September 24 – National Public Lands Day
November 11 – Veterans Day

Muir Woods National Monument Entrance

Is there food and drinks at Muir Woods?

Yes, you can grab a bite to eat at the Muir Woods Cafe. In fact, the Muir Woods Cafe might have the very best food out of all the National Monuments! Almost everything at the cafe is sourced from local farms and bakeries. If your Muir Woods tour gets here early in the morning, you can enjoy coffee, tea, and some fantastic pastries. Their full lunch menu begins at 11 am, and you can enjoy park favorites like their Marin Melt. Please note that National Monuments don’t offer plastic straws or lids because of the impact it has on the park.

Is there a gift shop at Muir Woods?

One of the only materialistic Muir Woods attractions is its famous gift shop. You can find many products made from redwoods that make perfect souvenirs. It’s worth taking a walk around the Muir Woods gift shop before you leave the area.
Pro tip: the best budget souvenirs are pencils and postcards.

Where are the restrooms at Muir Woods?

There are two sets of restrooms at Muir Woods. The largest set of restrooms are in the parking lot.
If there is a line or they are closed for cleaning, you’ll want to head into the park for the other Muir Woods restrooms. About five minutes into Muir Woods, just off the main wooden boardwalk, you’ll find the cafe, gift shop, and additional restrooms.

Can you bring dogs to Muir Woods?

No, you cannot bring dogs to Muir Woods.
Muir Woods has strict policies when it comes to pets being brought into the park. Only service animals are permitted inside any National Monument. Pets and emotional support animals are not allowed inside of Muir Woods.

Is there a redwood you can drive through in Muir Woods?

This one surprises a lot of travelers, but no there is not a redwood that you can drive through at Muir Woods. The closest drive-thru redwood is a four-hour drive from Muir Woods. However, we guarantee you will still have a fantastic experience admiring the redwoods at Muir Woods.

How do you get to Muir Woods from San Francisco?

Muir Woods is just north of San Francisco on the Pacific Coast Highway. There are few different ways of getting to Muir Woods from SF. Check out this blog post for the Best (and Worst) Ways of Getting to Muir Woods from San Francisco.

How do you get to Muir Woods from Sausalito?

Sausalito sits in the shadow of Mount Tamalpais, where you’ll find Muir Woods nestled into the valley of the mountain. Since the redwood forest is about 30 minutes away, lunch in Sausalito and dessert in Sausalito is the perfect way to end a Muir Woods adventure.

To get to Muir Woods from Sausalito, you can take the Muir Woods public shuttle. Parking at Muir Woods is limited and requires advanced reservations. So you’ll want to make reservations for the public Muir Woods shuttle to be sure you get a ticket.

muir-woods-tour

Can you bike to Muir Woods?

Technically, yes, you can bike to Muir Woods, but it isn’t suggested.

The peak of Mount Tamalpais is over 2,500 feet. In California, cyclists can legally share any road that a car can drive on, but the road to Muir Woods is winding and has no bike lane. If that wasn’t bad enough, it is filled with A LOT of tour buses, shuttles buses, and out-of-town drivers.

While you can bike all the way to Muir Woods, we can’t in good conscience recommend it.

If biking is what you want to do, you can always take our Bike the Bridge and Shuttle to Muir Woods tour. Hop on one of our rental bikes to bike across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito and then catch our private shuttle to Muir Woods on our newest combination bike and minibus San Francisco Muir Woods tour. It’s the best of both worlds!

Pick up some wheels and join us on our Bike the Bridge and Shuttle to Muir Woods Tour Today! Learn More About our Muir Woods Biking Tour

Can you rideshare to Muir Woods?

Again, technically yes you can, but this is only a slightly better way to get to Muir Woods than biking there. Your driver will lose reception once they begin driving up the mountain, and if they aren’t familiar with the mountain roads, they could easily get confused.

Also, without cell reception at Muir Woods, you wouldn’t be able to order a rideshare back to San Francisco.

This is another reason why we always suggest taking a Muir Woods tour. On a tour, you can sit back and enjoy your Muir Woods drive.

Is there cell phone service at Muir Woods?

No, there is no cell service at Muir Woods. If you have a few quarters, you can step back in time and use their payphone.

Is there WiFi at Muir Woods?

No, there is no cell service or WiFi at Muir Woods. You can enjoy a refreshing digital detox.

Is there a Muir Woods shuttle?

Yes, there is a public shuttle to Muir Woods that runs every weekend and holiday of the year. You will need to buy your tickets in advance at GoMuirWoods.com.

The reservation system was rolled out in January 2018 and making reservations as far in advance as possible is strongly suggested. Here’s what to do if the Muir Woods shuttle is sold out.

How much is the Muir Woods shuttle?

Kids under 16 are free to ride the shuttle round trip, anyone older than 16 will need to pay $3.50.

How do you take the Muir Woods shuttle?

Taking the Muir Woods Shuttle is relatively easy. You have to go online and make your reservation for which stop and time you want to get picked up at. Then you show up to that stop before your selected time.

The most popular stop to get to Muir Woods is the Sausalito Ferry stop, which means this is the most crowded stop. Beat the crowds by reserving your tickets at the Pohono stop. A cab or rideshare to there will be worth it.

If you find tickets are all sold out, be sure to check out our blog on What to do if the Muir Woods Shuttle is Full.

Guided Muir Woods Tour

Are there private Muir Woods shuttles?

Yes, there are private Muir Woods shuttles, and we run one of them. One of our newest tours includes a bike rental to cruise across the Golden Gate Bridge where you will meet our private Muir Woods Shuttle.

There’s another company that uses unmarked black buses for their Muir Woods shuttle.

Are there San Francisco Muir Woods Tours?

Yes, and we have two of the best ones.

Our most popular is a seven-hour minibus tour through San Francisco, Sausalito, and Muir Woods. It’s called Dylan’s Famous Tour and stops for lunch in Sausalito, and stops at Muir Woods for over an hour. (Sausalito stop available on the 8:00 AM departure only.)

For the more adventurous, we also have a combination bike and minibus tour. On our Bike the Bridge & Shuttle to Muir Woods Tour you enjoy a solo ride along San Francisco’s waterfront and across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito where you’ll meet our private Muir Woods shuttle and spend over an hour exploring the redwoods before returning by bus to San Francisco.

How long does it take to visit Muir Woods?

We get a lot of people asking “how long does it take to see Muir Woods,” or “how much time to spend at Muir Woods?”

How long to spend in Muir Woods really depends on how long you want to be there. Muir Woods is a lot smaller than people realize, and the most popular hiking trail in Muir Woods only takes about an hour to complete.

On all of our tours, we spend a little over an hour exploring Muir Woods, as we feel this is enough time for tourists to experience the wonder of the park.

How long does it take to walk through Muir Woods?

You can hike through Muir Woods in about an hour. Check out our blog post The Three Best Trails for Anyone on a Muir Woods Tour, for a few trail options for your trip to Muir Woods.

Is there lodging near Muir Woods?

While there are no official “Muir Woods hotels,” you can find some nice hotels close by, in Sausalito and San Francisco.

The tour was good,Patrick was a great guide. Please,Dont advertise the Twin Peaks stop, since you guys don't stop there and was included. Its false information. We pay for stuff ,that is not included !!Also, the 5 minutes stop at the Palace of fine arts doesn't give us any chance to see that beautiful place and enjoy. Its barely to go around the lake, which is nothing.

I booked the Lombard Leap tour spur of the moment after seeing a Facebook ad and I’m so glad I did. Laura was an amazing guide, personable, funny, knowledgeable, and had snacks and stickers for trivia questions which was a fun bonus. The tour was wonderful, got to see a lot of beautiful views and learn about the history of the area.

We were staying in San Francisco recently and decided to take one of the advertised tours. We decided on Dylan Tours because of the many positive reviews on various websites. The tour visited most of the popular attractions and areas in the city. The best part of the tour was our guide Trevor. He is a third generation San Franciscan and native. He added a lot of background information to the tour narrative and has some very interesting anecdotes and in depth historical information. In addition, he is a genuinely professional and personal guy. If you're in SF and are interested in a guided tour of the I recommend Dylan's Tours and I would definitely ask for Trevor as your guide.

Muir Woods Full Day tour With Dylan's Tour We went on the full-day Muir Woods tour, and our guide, Dylan, was amazing! We had the best time listening to his stories and learning about the history of San Francisco as we drove around the city. Despite it being Fleet Week, traffic wasn’t terrible, and Dylan did a fantastic job keeping us on schedule while making sure we enjoyed every stop. Our time in Sausalito was wonderful! We had delicious burgers at Napa Valley Burger Company and still had time to walk around and explore the town. Muir Woods was absolutely beautiful, peaceful, and even better than we expected. We can’t say enough good things about this tour, and especially Dylan! He was knowledgeable, entertaining, and made the entire experience so enjoyable. If you’re visiting San Francisco, I highly recommend booking a tour with Dylan’s Tours! Thank you, Dylan, for such a memorable day!

Guide was informative with a good sense of humour. Trip is essentially a bus tour between 9-2 including few photo stops in the city, view point of golden gate bridge and pass by Sausalito and spend 90 mins in Muir woods. Alcaratz tour is late afternoon which is managed separately by the ferry provider. Overall tour was good but not worth almost $180

Best tour in San Francisco I would 100% recommend booking a tour with this company, booking was easy, their communication was great, especially as they asked us to change our times which actually worked out better for us anyway. Finding the pick up point was also really easy and our tour guide Roger was just the best, his knowledge of San Francisco was just amazing and he showed us some truly amazing things, he had a wealth of knowledge about other things we could do here that were really budget friendly and we actually did do some of the things he suggested. Our visit to Muir woods was stunning, so beautiful and peaceful, my only complaint was that we could have stayed there much longer, but even with the 90 minutes we still were able to have a good walk around. Again if you looking for tours in San Francisco then Dylan’s tours are what you’re looking for. Thank you for a truly amazing time.

Being saved in Sausalito I took the San Francisco City Tour in early September. The weather was perfect because we could see the Golden Gate Bridge and we all got great pictures. One of my main reasons I know, I will book (and recommend) Dylan’s Tours is because during our stop at Sausalito; I misheard the return time. And when I was back, I was wondering why I wasn’t seeing anyone in my group. I called the company, and Mary was able to order a Lyft for me as well as letting my tour guide know what was happening. And I was able to catch up with my group at Muir Woods. I want to give a shout out to my tour guide, Jules he was so knowledgeable and funny; we all had a great time. So, if you want to book a tour where you are assured that they will have your back and come to your rescue, please pick Dylan‘s Tours.

Well organised, friendly, good value double up tour. We had a great day that was guided by Laura. She was very personable and pointed out so many places of interest. She added in lots of anecdotes. We were in a small open air van and we really enjoyed that aspect of the tour. Hop on hop off tours are too onerous for me as I have some mobility issues. We did stop and get out at the Golden Gate Bridge and the Palace of fine arts. Lovely short stops! The pick up arrangements were clear and we were let out at the ferry landing for the Alcatraz ferry. Not everyone did that part of the tour but we were glad we did. Once at Alcatraz you get an audio set and it’s great. An added bonus for me was that a little trolley was available for anyone with mobility issues to take me up to the top to start the cell tour. It’s a steep climb.

Unmissable great value trip. An unmissable tour if you travel to San Francisco. Do this great tour early on your trip and it will tick off many must see places including Lombard Street.

Exactly what we wanted! An amazing trip! Exactly what we wanted and Patrick our tour guide was amazing. It’s a short city tour about an hour long, photo stop at Golden Gate Bridge and then onto Muir woods. Beautiful place and 90 minutes was just enough time to do just over an hour of walking (we went to bridge three and back) and then spent some time in the gift shop and cafe. There’s an option to get off in Sausalito on the way back if you want to explore more but we stayed on the shuttle and were taken back to our starting point. Patrick provided lots of great facts, jokes and music along the way. Would highly recommend Dylan’s Tours!

Sit back and relax… Easiest way to see some of the more interesting attractions on limited time without the stress of having to manage on your own. Show up on time and get taken care of the rest of the day! I appreciated being able to sit back and enjoy the experience rather than worrying about navigation, schedule, driving, parking, etc.,. Would recommend the Alcatraz add-on.

Dylan provides a good overview of the most famous San Francisco neighborhoods. Recommended restaurants and places to go even told us about carnival which is going on this weekend. A great guide and he kept us on time!

What an incredible experience! Dylan was our host for the day. The tour and conversation was great! Patrick and Dylan got my husband and I a reservation at the Barrel house on Valentine’s Day in Sausalito. Even after we ran 15 mins behind at Muir Woods ( no fault to our tour guide ) the restaurant was still holding our table because they “ they just knew we were coming” Thank you Dylan and Patrick for such a great day! You are our two favorite people in San Francisco!

The post is inaccurate the host informed me over the phone that the tour is actually 4 hours and that they spend about 15 minutes at each of the locations aside from Muir Woods where you will spend an hour. I was told over the phone that I could cancel because the listing is inaccurate but they stopped replying after. You’re better off going to these locations on your own which is what I did. save your money.

the trip to Muir woods was magical and our guide Jeffrey was fun and knowledgeable. I could have used another hour in the woods just to longer and savor the environment but didn't feel rushed - just left wanting more. I loved the photo stops along the way - easiet way to get a great bridge photo! lunch in Sausalito was fun too. great recommendations and good food.

Great deal and value, our guide was knowledgeable of the city and always willing to take photos. Also he was very accommodating to drop us off at the location close to where we were going after the tour, as long as he was passing it. The only thing that was annoying was waiting for people who were late. It tells you to arrive 20-15 mins before the tour but we still had to wait for 2 people and then wait for people again on each stop, not the driver’s fault, just need to be more strict with time cus it’s not fair for many of us.

Did a tour this weekend that went to Muir Woods, Alcatraz, stopped in Sausalito, and a couple other spots. Was very smooth from pick up to drop off. We landed in the city very early am and debated cancelling the tour but were glad we didn’t. Patrick kept the ride lively as well. Would recommend to anyone traveling to San Francisco.

I went on a tour with Sully and cannot recommend it enough. Sully was extremely knowledgeable and funny. He had so much to tell us about San Francisco. We went to so many places and I feel like the tour covered just enough. The bus was clean and we were offered water and a snack upon the start of the tour. Muir Woods was my favorite part of the trip. I think anyone visiting should book one of the bus tours! You won’t regret it!
