WE GOT YOU COVERED

FAQS AND TOUR DETAILS

Where does this tour begin?

Your day begins at Pier 33 – Alcatraz Landing, the official departure point for all Alcatraz ferries. This is the same ferry used by the National Park Service, ensuring you get the authentic experience. After you book, we’ll send you a confirmation email with step-by-step walking directions, parking suggestions, public transit options, and arrival tips to make your morning smooth and stress-free.
You simply arrive, check in, and board — everything else is taken care of.

How do I get to the bike shop after visiting Alcatraz?

After returning from Alcatraz, you’ll make your way to our Fisherman’s Wharf shop at 2715 Hyde St., which is an easy 10–15 minute flat walk along the waterfront. This route passes by great places to grab lunch or coffee, making it a natural transition into your afternoon adventure.
If you prefer something quicker, you can take a short rideshare. Your confirmation includes clear directions, maps, and timing guidance so you can move at a relaxed pace.

How long should I plan to spend on Alcatraz?

Most guests spend 2 to 2.5 hours on the island. This gives you time to enjoy the award-winning Cellhouse audio tour, walk the historic grounds, visit the exhibits, explore at your own pace, take photos, and browse the bookstore.
We schedule the bike portion of the package after noon, ensuring you have more than enough time and never feel rushed.

What time does the bike portion start?

Your bike rental begins in the early afternoon, giving you flexibility after your Alcatraz visit. There’s no strict time slot you must hit — simply head to the shop when you’re ready. We’ll get you fitted, review the routes, set you up with a map, and help you launch into your self-guided ride at a comfortable pace.

Is the bike portion guided?

No — the afternoon is self-guided, which many guests love because it gives them complete freedom. You decide how fast or slow to ride, how long to spend at viewpoints, and which neighborhoods you want to explore.
But “self-guided” doesn’t mean “on your own.” We make the experience feel simple and stress-free with complete route guidance, personalized suggestions, and on-call support.

How do I know where to ride if the afternoon is self-guided?

We set you up confidently before you leave. Every rental includes:

  • A detailed, easy-to-read map
  • Turn-by-turn directions following the safest bike paths in the city
  • A clearly highlighted route to reach the Golden Gate Bridge
  • Recommended stop points, including scenic overlooks, restrooms, beaches, parks, and cafés
  • Staff who walk through the entire route with you so you can visualize the ride before you begin

Most guests are surprised by how easy the path is — it’s mostly flat, scenic, and beginner-friendly.

Is the ride difficult?

The route is rated Beginner to Moderate. You’ll ride on mostly flat waterfront paths with a few gentle, manageable hills leading toward the Golden Gate Bridge.
If you want the most comfortable experience possible, choose an e-bike — it makes climbing hills feel effortless and allows you to focus on views instead of effort.

Is it safe to bike across the Golden Gate Bridge on my own?

Yes — biking the Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most popular and safest activities in San Francisco. The bridge has a designated bike lane that is physically separated from cars.
Before you leave, we’ll explain:

  • Which side of the bridge bikes use depending on the time of day
  • How to safely share the lane with other cyclists
  • What conditions to expect (wind, fog, or crowds)
  • How to navigate turns and blind corners
  • Where the best viewpoints and photo stops are

Tens of thousands of visitors ride across the bridge each year — you’ll be in good company.

What should I wear and bring?

San Francisco weather can change quickly, especially near the Golden Gate Bridge. We recommend bringing:

  • Comfortable clothing for biking
  • Closed-toe shoes for safety
  • Layers, since temperatures vary from the waterfront to the Presidio
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • A water bottle

Every bike comes with a handlebar bag or rear rack, perfect for carrying small items like jackets, snacks, or cameras.

Is this tour kid-friendly?

Yes — as long as the child is a confident rider who can safely navigate a bike path. We also offer children’s bikes and limited child equipment.
If you’re traveling with kids, please let us know in advance so we can reserve the correct bike sizes and make sure everyone feels comfortable before heading out.

What if the weather is foggy or windy?

Fog and wind are normal near the Golden Gate Bridge and often part of the experience. We’ll help you choose the best route based on conditions and provide practical tips to keep you comfortable.
If weather ever becomes unsafe — which is rare — we’ll offer alternatives or help you reschedule. Your comfort and safety always come first.

What happens if I have an issue during the ride?

We provide full support throughout your self-guided ride. This includes:

  • A direct phone number to reach our team
  • Real-time troubleshooting
  • Assistance at our shop or Sausalito drop-off point
  • Replacement bikes if needed (depending on location)

Mechanical issues are uncommon, and most can be resolved quickly to keep your day running smoothly.

What’s included in this package?

Your Alcatraz + Bike Rental package includes everything you need for an amazing two-part adventure:

  • Official Alcatraz ferry ticket and island admission
  • Self-guided Alcatraz Cellhouse audio tour
  • Afternoon self-guided bike rental (regular or e-bike)
  • Helmet, lock, and detailed bike route map
  • Personalized route suggestions and on-call support throughout your ride

What’s not included?

Lunch is not included.
Most guests grab food near Fisherman’s Wharf or the waterfront before beginning their bike ride.

What is your cancellation policy?

You may cancel and receive a 100% refund up to 4 days before your tour.
If you cancel within 4 days, we can refund everything minus the cost of your Alcatraz ticket, as Alcatraz tickets are issued and non-refundable once confirmed.

How long does the full experience take?

Plan for 5–7 hours total between Alcatraz and your bike ride, depending on how long you choose to explore each location. This package creates a full, unforgettable San Francisco day.

Can I upgrade to an e-bike?

Yes — you can upgrade to an e-bike at the shop. If you want the easiest, most comfortable experience possible, especially for the Golden Gate Bridge, we highly recommend it.

Can I drop my bike off in Sausalito?

Yes — you may return your bike in Sausalito for an additional fee. This lets you skip the ride back uphill, grab a meal, and take the ferry home at your leisure.

Can I take the bike on the ferry?

Yes — both Blue & Gold Fleet and Golden Gate Ferry allow bikes onboard (standard and e-bikes). This option gives you full flexibility in how you end your day.

Can I store belongings at your shop?

Yes — we offer complimentary storage for small bags or personal belongings while you’re on your ride.

Do I need a reservation?

Yes — Alcatraz tickets sell out weeks in advance, so reservations are required. This combo package guarantees your spot and removes the stress of trying to secure tickets separately.
