PRO TIP:

We recommend booking early. Alcatraz frequently sells out weeks in advance, especially during peak season. While we aim for a 12:00 PM ferry departure, exact times are based on availability at the time of booking. If the 12:00 PM slot is full, you may be scheduled for a later ferry, which could affect the overall flow of your day. Booking early ensures the smoothest experience and best timing.

FAQS AND TOUR DETAILS

What’s the difference between the Open Air City Highlights Tour + Alcatraz and The Lombard Leap?

Both tours show you San Francisco from an open-air vehicle, but they’re designed for very different kinds of days.

The Open Air City Highlights Tour + Alcatraz is a longer, more complete experience. You’ll spend the morning on a fully guided open-air city tour, covering multiple neighborhoods and major landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge, Lombard Street, and Coit Tower, with photo stops and live narration throughout. After the city tour, your day continues with an official ferry ride and self-guided visit to Alcatraz Island. This tour is ideal if you want a well-paced, immersive day that combines sightseeing, storytelling, and one of San Francisco’s most famous attractions, all with tickets and timing handled for you.

The Lombard Leap is short, fast, and high-energy. It focuses on the highlights of the city in under an hour, including a thrilling drive down Lombard Street, key viewpoints, and neighborhood scenery. There are no extended stops, making it perfect if you’re tight on time, want a quick taste of the city, or are looking for a fun add-on between other plans.

In short:

  • Open Air City Highlights + Alcatraz: Half-day experience, deeper storytelling, multiple photo stops, and a full Alcatraz visit included.
  • 50-Minute Lombard Leap: Quick, fun, and city-focused. Great for first looks, short stays, or fitting sightseeing into a busy schedule.

If you want the most iconic San Francisco day with minimal planning, choose the City Highlights + Alcatraz. If you want a fast, memorable city ride, the Lombard Leap is the way to go.

What should I wear?
Dress comfortably and in layers. San Francisco weather can change quickly, and since this is an open-air tour with a covered top and open sides, a light jacket or hoodie is recommended. Comfortable walking shoes are best for exploring Alcatraz.
How long is the tour?

The open-air city tour lasts about 90 minutes. Your Alcatraz ferry departs around 12:30 PM, and you can explore the island at your own pace. Most guests finish their Alcatraz visit in about 2.5 hours.

Where do we meet?

We meet at the Fisherman’s Wharf sign at the corner of Taylor Street and Jefferson Street. It’s an easy-to-find location in the heart of Fisherman’s Wharf.

What happens if it rains?

Tours operate rain or shine. Our open-air vehicles have a covered top, and light rain is common in San Francisco and usually passes quickly. We recommend bringing a light rain jacket just in case.

Can I add Muir Woods?

Muir Woods is not part of this experience and cannot be added on the same day. We recommend booking Muir Woods as a separate tour.

Is the tour family-friendly?
Yes. This tour is great for families, teens, and first-time visitors. Alcatraz is best for children who are comfortable walking and standing for longer periods.
Is the tour accessible?
The open-air vehicle requires stepping up into the vehicle, and Alcatraz involves walking on uneven surfaces and some hills. If you have mobility concerns, we recommend reaching out to us before booking so we can help you decide if this tour is the right fit.
Can we book a private version?
Yes. Private open-air city tours with Alcatraz can be arranged. Contact us directly to customize the experience, timing, and route.
What movies will we see along the route?
You’ll pass filming locations from classic San Francisco movies like Bullitt, The Rock, and Mrs. Doubtfire, with fun behind-the-scenes stories shared by your guide.
Do you provide hotel pickup for the regular tour?
No. This tour meets at our Fisherman’s Wharf departure point, which is easy to reach by foot, rideshare, or public transportation.
Can locals enjoy this tour too?
Absolutely. Locals love this tour for the open-air ride, movie trivia, neighborhood stories, and seeing familiar places from a fresh perspective.
Is tipping the guide expected?
Tipping is not required but always appreciated if you enjoyed your experience and the guide did a great job.
What makes this different from other tours?

This tour combines a small-group open-air city experience with an official visit to Alcatraz Island in one seamless day. With fresh air, local guides, iconic stops, and a relaxed pace, it feels more personal and fun than a standard bus tour.
