Lombard Street earned its nickname because of its eight sharp switchbacks designed in the 1920s to help cars safely descend a slope that was originally far too steep for early automobiles. The curves weren’t built for tourists, but they’ve become one of the most photographed features in San Francisco. Between the red-brick road, the steep grade and the surrounding gardens, it’s one of those places that really captures the quirky charm of the city.
